The Editorial Manager, Features at National Geographic is a critical role responsible for assigning and editing ambitious stories across digital and print platforms.  This individual will manage the development, commissioning, and editing of various stories, focusing on reported projects across National Geographic's core content areas. They will leverage data and audience analytics to optimize story reach and impact.  Key responsibilities include managing workflows and team members, nurturing relationships with writers, and assisting leaders in scheduling and planning.  The ideal candidate is a self-starter passionate about exceptional magazine writing and digital storytelling, with deep connections to a diverse range of writers and a keen understanding of the National Geographic brand and mission. The role requires strong editorial judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

They should possess deep connections with a diverse range of extraordinary writers, and an eagerness to dream up new and creative ways to engage and grow National Geographic’s audience.Responsibilities: <ul><li>Manage the development, commissioning, and editing of various stories, with a focus on ambitious reported projects across all of National Geographic’s core content areas.</li><li>Manage related workflows and team members to ensure that projects come together in accordance with deadlines and budgets, while meeting editorial objectives.</li><li>Leverage data and audience analytics to develop and implement strategies for optimizing the reach and impact of our stories across platforms.</li><li>Form, nurture, and maintain relationships with exceptional writers; Develop and deepen connection with new voices and diverse perspectives.</li><li>Assist leaders in scheduling and planning for project publication and completion; supervise administrative tasks, as needed.</li></ul>Minimum Qualifications:<ul><li>Minimum of 5 years of publishing experience that demonstrates increasing editorial responsibility with a large media organization(s), while managing content and teams.</li><li>Outstanding editorial judgement, strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills.</li><li>Excellent writing and verbal communications skills, strong knowledge of the National Geographic brand and mission, and demonstrated expertise in related core topic areas.</li><li>Ability to take overall responsibility for concept and content, as well as manage creative relationships.</li><li>Keen understanding of industry goals, varied approaches to storytelling, and ability to manage multiple projects at once, on deadline.</li><li>Strong communication and interpersonal skills.</li><li>Self-motivated and resourceful, with the ability to work with minimal supervision, problem solve creatively, and exercise independent judgment.</li></ul>Preferred Qualifications:<ul><li>Ability to manage and grow a related team while working collaboratively in highly matrixed conditions with colleagues outside editorial, including communications and marketing, and business support (sales, promotion, and development).</li><li>Proven track record in growing digital audiences and expanding brand reach.</li><li>Curiosity about the planet and our place within it and the ability to grasp new subject matter quickly.</li><li>Understanding of the editorial process from conception to completion, and demonstrated ability to resolve technical, operational, and organizational problems.</li><li>Proficient in Microsoft Office, Adobe products, Editorial CMS (K4/InCopy), digital media platforms; knowledge of AirTable is a plus.</li></ul>Required Education:<ul><li>Bachelor’s Degree</li></ul> The hiring range for this position in Washington, D.C. is $113,800.00 to $152,500.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. Utilize expertise in data engineering and cloud technologies to contribute to the overall success of the organization by providing the necessary data infrastructure and fostering a data-driven culture. Demonstrate a strong architectural sense in defining data models, leveraging the Poly-base concept to optimize data storage and access. Facilitate seamless data integration and management across the organization, ensuring a robust and scalable data architecture. Take responsibility for defining and designing the data catalogue, effectively modelling all data within the organization, to enable efficient data discovery, access, and management for various stakeholders Knowledge Skills and Abilities, Key Responsibilities: Key Responsibilities <ul><li>Design, develop, optimize, and maintain data architecture and pipelines that adhere to ETL principles and business goals.</li><li>Develop complex queries and solutions using Scala, .NET, Python/PySpark languages.</li><li>Implement and maintain data solutions on Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, and Databricks</li><li>Create data products for analytics and data scientist team members to improve their productivity.</li><li>Advise, consult, mentor, and coach other data and analytic professionals on data standards and practices.</li><li>Foster a culture of sharing, re-use, design for scale stability, and operational efficiency of data and analytical solutions.</li><li>Lead the evaluation, implementation, and deployment of emerging tools and processes for analytic data engineering in order to improve our productivity as a team.</li><li>Develop and deliver communication and education plans on analytic data engineering capabilities, standards, and processes.</li><li>Partner with business analysts and solutions architects to develop technical architectures for strategic enterprise projects and initiatives.</li><li>Collaborate with other team members and effectively influence, direct, and monitor project work.</li><li>Develop strong understanding of the business and support decision making. </li></ul>
Requirements Experience: <ul><li>10 years of overall experience &amp; at least 5 years of relevant experience </li><li>5 years of experience working with Azure data factory &amp; data bricks </li></ul>
Skills: <ul><li>Bachelor's degree required; Computer Science Engineering.</li><li>5+ years of experience working in data engineering or architecture role.</li><li>Expertise in SQL and data analysis and experience with at least one programming language (Scala and .NET preferred).</li><li>Experience developing and maintaining data warehouses in big data solutions.</li><li>Experience with, Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, and Databricks) in the data and analytics space is a must</li><li>Database development experience using Hadoop or Big Query and experience with a variety of relational, NoSQL, and cloud data lake technologies.</li><li>Worked with BI tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Looker, Shiny.</li><li>Conceptual knowledge of data and analytics, such as dimensional modelling, ETL, reporting tools, data governance, data warehousing, and structured and unstructured data.</li><li>Big Data Development experience using Hive, Impala, Spark, and familiarity with Kafka.</li><li>Exposure to machine learning, data science, computer vision, artificial intelligence, statistics, and/or applied mathematics. </li></ul>
Languages: <ul><li>Fluency in verbal and written English mandatory.</li><li>Fluency is Spanish &amp; French is useful. </li></ul>
