Job Summary

Motorola Solutions is seeking a Senior Staff Industrial Designer to join its award-winning Experience Design & Research Team in Penang, Malaysia. This role involves creating world-class hardware designs, uncovering user problems, and developing innovative solutions grounded in user requirements. The designer will collaborate with marketing and engineering, integrate into a multidisciplinary group, and utilize expertise in user experience, human factors, and advanced technologies to design critical communication solutions that can save lives.

Must Have

Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited industrial design program.
7+ years of experience as an Industrial Designer or related position.
Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills and a proven track record.
Ability to appreciate and work with human factors and research.
Sensitivity to culture and end users.
Strong 2-D visualization skills (sketching, Illustrator, Photoshop).
Solid expertise in at least one 3-D CAD program (Solid Works, Pro E, Rhino).
Proficiency in video and animation (Adobe After Effects or similar) for storytelling.
Willingness to be based in Bayan Lepas, Penang.
Provide a link to a portfolio or digital examples of work when applying.

Good to Have

A Masters degree is a plus.

The Experience Design & Research Team is a cross functional group within the Chief Technology Office. User Centered Design and Research is the fuel that fires the next generation of experiences and solutions for our mission critical customers and users. The team consists of Industrial Design, UI/UX, Human Factors, Research, and Technologists who design for diverse and challenging markets. Police, Fire and Industrial user groups all have very distinct and tangible design problems; whether it’s the dirt, grime and high noise of industrial environments, gloves and turnout gear for Fire or managing intense cognitive loads during police action. Our team is exploring, testing and designing for emerging technologies that will define the next generation commercial, public safety and first responder communication solutions. Your designs will enable a Use Experience and total solution that can save lives in moments that matter.

Job Description

Your Creative Tool Kit:

Must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited industrial design program. A Masters degree is a plus. A senior Industrial Designer is an established and productive professional who works independently and with general supervision. This position requires exceptional interpersonal skills and the capability to collaborate in a team-focused environment. Collaboration and communication skills are critical to communicating designs and outcomes with other leaders and decision-makers in a cross-discipline environment. An ability to appreciate and work with human factors and research to define marketing and user requirements. Sensitivity to culture and end users should complement a strong core knowledge of design. Problems faced are challenging and varied, this role requires the ability to influence others, establishing and defending user-driven and principle-based designs across multiple parallel projects. A senior designer is expected to analyze the problem to uncover the "real" issues about users, context, and environment. Judge concept effectiveness by linking to use cases, user requirements, and research data. Choose the right plan of action based on available information, timing, and resources.

Integrate effectively into a multidisciplinary group that includes cognitive and behavioral scientists, interaction designers, and human factors engineers and deliver to strict deadlines in a fast paced environment.
Understand and communicate a user journey or product value proposition through various media, storyboards, animations and videos
Quickly identify and create appropriate design concepts with follow through to production.
Follow up with manufacturing and production processes as required.

Basic Requirements

Candidate must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited industrial design program or any relevant field. Candidate with Master's Degree will have an added advantage.
7+ years of experience as an Industrial Designer or related position
This position requires exceptional interpersonal skills. A proven track record must be demonstrated.
An ability to appreciate and work with human factors and research.
Sensitivity to culture and end users should complement a strong core knowledge in design.
Strong 2-D visualization skills are necessary such as sketching, Illustrator and Photoshop.
A solid expertise in at least one 3-D CAD program, such as Solid Works, Pro E and Rhino or other similar tools are required.
Proficiency in video and animation (Adobe After Effects or similar) for story telling of either user experience or product attributes.
Willing to be based in Bayan Lepas, Penang.
