​​Role and Responsibilities​  

Blind Squirrel Games is looking for a Senior Technical Designer.  The Senior Technical Designer will be responsible for creating and implementing a suite of different game design components and tools. 

The ideal candidate for this role is a self-driven, talented individual who enjoys designing game systems, core mechanics, and crafting the overall best gameplay experience. They support and grow more junior designers through knowledge-sharing, debugging, training, and the creation of technical design documentation. 

This is a full-time position offering the flexibility to work from our Irvine office, Austin office, or remotely, preferably within the western United states, and based on the needs of the organization.

The salary range being considered for this role is $110,000.00 - $145,000.00 USD. This base pay range is for the U.S. and is not applicable to locations outside of the U.S. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance, and location.  

Responsibilities  

  • Create and maintain high-quality gameplay components and tools with a focus on flexibility and scalability. 
  • Excel at rapid prototyping to prove out concepts quickly to all levels of development.
  • Establish long-term plans and collaborate cross-departmentally on core gameplay mechanic creation and implementation.
  • Develop and manage complex game systems (combat state machines, AI, etc.)
  • Standardize, document and advocate for high-quality technical design, continuously improving the workflow process as it relates to the game's interactive elements such as game systems, controls, and interfaces.   
  • Participate in and contribute to cross-functional discussions related to the development and implementation of tools and required game systems adjustments.
  • Assist in mentoring junior members of the design team regarding best technical design practices.  
  • Other relevant duties and responsibilities as assigned to help complete company or department objectives.  

Qualifications and Education Requirements  

  • Skilled in one or more scripting languages, such as Python, Lua, C# or C++ 
  • 5+ years of experience in the game industry or related area    
  • A portfolio demonstrating exemplary design experience working in games. 
  • Game credit(s) in the Sr. Technical Designer role, or similar.  

Preferred Skills  

  • Strong problem solving skills 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills across all disciplines 
  • Expert knowledge of at least one popular game engine, such as Unreal and Unity. 
  • Comfortable with mathematics and/or physics 
  • Highly skilled in data management & balancing 

Pluses  

  • Shipped a triple AAA Game  
  • Examples of design related tools
  • FPS & Live Service experience
