As an Automation Design Tooling Engineer at Illumina, you will be part of the team supporting product launches and process improvements through automation solutions in Singapore. You will design, develop, and implement automated systems, including machinery, tools and equipment for manufacturing processes. This includes collaborating with various teams, gathering user inputs, and incorporating them into the automation system design. You will also participate in all stages of automation solution development, from idea generation to production release, and enhance automation design rules based on past projects. You will also be responsible for troubleshooting equipment and process issues related to automation and tooling, and supporting the introduction of Industrial 4.0 concepts.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineering or related field
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience in automation equipment design
  • In-depth knowledge of customized automated machine design and assembly
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Solidworks, etc.)
  • Experience in setting up final acceptance requirements
  • Good understanding of material selections and automation technologies
Good to have:
  • Experience with highly automated liquid or powder filling tools
  • Experience with high volume manufacturing in a high-tech industry
  • Knowledge of industrial 4.0, DFMA, and DFM

The role for Automation Solution Center within Illumina Singapore Hub is to support successful products launch and various Center of Excellence in Process improvement through automation solutions. Collaborate with HQ, Manufacturing Technology and Transfer, as part of ASC to deliver an integrated automated solution for high volume manufacturing in Singapore. This role will be part of the Automation team within the Engineering function. An Automation Design Tooling Engineer combines automation engineering principles with tooling expertise. They design, develop, and implement automated systems, often involving the creation and modification of tools and equipment for manufacturing processes. This role requires a blend of mechanical engineering, system integration knowledge, and a strong understanding of automation technologies. One will be required to work in closed collaboration with Safety, Quality, Manufacturing, R & D and other engineering groups to gather their users’ inputs and incorporate them in the automation system design where applicable. Participate and support all stages of automation solution from idea generation, design conceptualization, equipment built, buy-off, qualifications and deployment to production release. In addition, through your knowledge and feedbacks gather from past projects, you will improve and enhance automation design rules and explore feasibility with new product introduction team or contract manufacturers/ automation partners. Position Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop and implement automated machinery and processes, including robots and other automation devices.
  • Design, build and modify tools and equipment used in manufacturing, often with assistance of CAD software.
  • Identify opportunities to automate existing processes and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of automated systems.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and process issues related to automation and tooling.
  • Carry out task independently and with guidance as necessary from seniors or manager.
  • Provide supporting data on risk and recommendations in area of responsibility and at critical interface to other teams.
  • Select appropriate components and vendors in area of responsibility, without oversight.
  • Track associated project expenses.
  • Work cross functionally with Safety, Quality, Manufacturing, R&D and Engineering to develop URS for new machine and improve design concepts on existing equipment.
  • Support introduction of Industrial 4.0 concepts to automation design and implementation

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineering or a related field
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience in automation equipment design for industry/factory and scale-up of machine in a production environment
  • In-depth knowledge experience of customized automated machine design and assembly required.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Solidworks,etc)
  • Experience in setting up final acceptance requirement (FAT), develop proof of concept (POC) design using solid work design and AutoCAD simulation.
  • Experience with highly automated liquid or powder filling and sealing tools desired.
  • Experience with high volume manufacturing in a high-tech consumables industry desired.
  • Proven track record in design concept in automation tooling that resolved manufacturing challenges such as scalability and error proofing.
  • Good understanding of material selections, machine parts fabrication and processes, automation technologies, robotics, industrial electrical panel and manufacturing processes.
  • Good inter-departmental communication skills and documentation skills are required.
  • Well verse in analytical /problem solving technique with a high-level problem solving and reasoning skills required.
  • Knowledge of industrial 4.0, DFMA and DFM preferred.
