Job Description
As an AV Safety Benchmarking Engineer, you will collaborate with various teams including software, operations, vehicle engineering, and legal to assess and monitor the safety performance of autonomous vehicle technology. You will conduct research, build metrics and models, and implement rigorous and repeatable processes to ensure the highest level of safety. This role involves mining internal/external incident data, presenting findings to cross-functional partners, and developing dashboards for data-driven decision-making. You will also support investigations into safety trends using data-driven processes.
Must have:
- BS Degree in Computer Science, data analytics, statistics, or related field
- 2-3 years of experience in Automotive, Aviation, Transportation, Defense, Robotics or safety-focused industries
- Experience gathering data and building dashboards
- Sound analysis & statistical inference skills
- Familiarity with SQL, Python, R, or Scala
Good to have:
- Previous AV company experience
- Master’s degree (engineering/data science)
- Experience designing comparison metrics
- Experience building mechanisms for business insights

Job Details
As an AV Safety Benchmarking Engineer, you will work closely with a variety of partners, including software, operations, vehicle engineering, systems design and assurance, hardware, communications, policy and legal teams. You will conduct research, build metrics and models to assess, monitor, and diagnose the safety performance of our AV technology. You will drive measurability of safety and implement innovative processes that are rigorous, diligent and systematic, as well as applicable and repeatable as Zoox continues to scale, to ensure the highest level of safety in the organization and product.
In this role you will...
- Facilitate, research, design, and implement innovative safety-benchmarking analysis methodologies and processes for quantified decision-making and guidance.
- Identify and mine internal/external incidents and other databases to extract information relevant to vehicle behavior, and present data and findings to cross-functional partners.
- Develop dashboards for safety data comparisons for consumption by internal stakeholders to support data-driven strategy & decision-making
- Support investigations related to safety trends with data-driven processes.
Qualifications
- BS Degree in Computer Science, data analytics, statistics, or related field with at least 2-3 years of experience in the Automotive, Aviation, Transportation, Defense, Robotics or other safety-focused industries
- Experience gathering & using data and building dashboards to support decision-making at various levels in an organization
- Sound analysis & statistical inference skills, with the ability to communicate uncertainty appropriately to engineering and business stakeholders
- Familiarity with SQL, Python, R, or Scala
- Motivated self-starter and always looking to improve upon status quo

$145,000 - $200,000 a year
Base Salary Range
There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. The listed range applies only to the base salary. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position.
