Job Description
As a Backend Engineer at Cognite, you will develop and maintain cutting-edge features for Cognite Data Fusion (CDF), scale CDF, apply synchronous and asynchronous design patterns, and produce high-quality, secure software. You'll collaborate with teams to shape product direction, improve service performance, fix vulnerabilities, and streamline code. This role requires you to be proactive in technical debt reduction. You will also keep documentation up-to-date and helpful. The team develops Cognite Data Fusion as a robust and scalable platform to solve industrial data problems, making operational data available at scale, and enabling data-driven decisions in asset-intensive industries.
Must have:
- Experience with software development in programming languages like Kotlin, Java, Python or Rust.
- Ability to learn other coding languages and use the best fit for purpose.
- Hands-on experience with large-scale cloud deployments (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and Kubernetes.
- Expert knowledge of computer science with strong competencies in data structures, algorithms and software design.
- Strong problem-solving skills, technical troubleshooting and diagnosing complex system issues.
Good to have:
- Experience in a SaaS product environment is an advantage.
- Experience in designing, building and maintaining infrastructure and web-services at large scale.
- Proven ability to prioritize work for maximum impact.

The Product team is the team responsible for developing Cognite Data Fusion as a robust and scalable platform for solving industrial data problems at Cognite. Cognite’s Cognite Data Fusion makes the operational data available at scale and adds value to the data through data processing. This enables asset-intensive industries to make data-driven decisions. Our platform is built on various technologies, each good at solving various challenges.
We believe in autonomous teams with developers, product managers and technical program managers working closely together. You'll work with skilled engineers on a critical authentication and authorization service, using the latest technologies and iterating quickly with end users for better product experiences.
As the first line of defense for securing privileged customer data, our work is crucial for customer and company success. Operating at the intersection of security, infrastructure, and feature development, our developers tackle creative technical challenges daily and engage with Cognite's most impactful business problems.

As a Backend Engineer at Cognite you will:
- Develop and maintain cutting edge features for Cognite Data Fusion (CDF)
- Scale CDF, make architectural trade-offs, applying synchronous and asynchronous design patterns
- Produce high-quality and secure software that is comprehensively tested, code reviewed and checked in regularly for continuous integration
- Shape our product’s direction by working closely with teams across engineering, product, and customer success
- Continuously monitor and improve the performance, reliability, and security of our services
- Proactively fix vulnerabilities, streamline code, and reduce technical debt
- Keep our documentation clear, current and genuinely helpful
We believe most of these should match you and your experience:
- Relevant and hands-on concentrated experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Kotlin, Java, Python or Rust)
- Ability to learn other coding languages and use the language best fit for purpose
- Hands-on experience with large-scale cloud deployments (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and Kubernetes
- Experience in a SaaS product environment is an advantage but not a requirement
- Experience in designing, building and maintaining infrastructure and web-services at large scale
