Job Description

The Communications / Naval Combat Systems Engineer will support Non-Combatant In-Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy. Responsibilities include developing and reviewing technical documentation, performing Life Cycle and Materiel Management, providing technical support, conducting technical investigations, managing design change documentation, analyzing requirements, preparing Work Packages, and developing engineering plans and procedures related to combat systems. The engineer will work with systems including navigation, communications, command and control, data processing, sensor systems, and ship’s weapons systems, ensuring tasks are completed within time and cost constraints.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Naval Architecture
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in Canada
  • 5+ years Systems Engineering experience with Naval/Marine Systems
Good to have:
  • Experience with the Royal Canadian Navy
  • Experience in delivering marine in-service support
  • Experience working with a defense contract
  • Project management experience
  • French language skills

Communications/Naval Combat Systems Engineer

Position Summary

Thales Canada is looking for a Communications / Naval Combat Systems Engineer to support its Non-Combatant In-Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy.

The Naval Combat Systems Engineer is responsible for engineering support of Naval Combat Systems including but not limited to:

  • Navigation Systems
  • Communications Systems
  • Command and control systems
  • Data processing systems
  • Above water and underwater sensor systems
  • Ship’s weapons systems and its ammunition

This support consists of planning, overseeing and executing engineering tasks within time and cost constraints to meet the Key Performance Indicators in accordance with Thales quality and commercial guidelines.

Key Areas of Responsibility

The key functions and areas of responsibility for the Naval Combat Systems Engineer include the following:

  • Developing and reviewing combat system related technical documentation including equipment specifications, installation and maintenance job instructions;
  • Performing Life Cycle and Materiel Management functions including but not limited to equipment obsolescence, material compatibility and disposal management;
  • Providing technical support of deficiencies of equipment or capability;
  • Conducting technical investigations into problems associated with combat systems, equipment and/or software issues, including root cause analyses, risk assessments and solution development;
  • Manage the preparation of combat system related design change documentation including manufacturing drawings, maintenance and installation instructions, and test and trials documentation;
  • Analyzing requirements associated with baseline changes to the ships configuration, equipment and software;
  • Preparing Work Packages and cost estimates for customer approval;
  • Preparing documented work scopes, suitable for the solicitation of quotations from external resources such as OEMs, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities or specialist service providers;
  • Developing engineering plans, processes and procedures related to combat systems as well as ship based software; and
  • Defining, developing and maintaining software configuration documentation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Computer, Electrical, Electronics Engineering or Naval Architecture;
  • Eligible to be registered as a Professional Engineer in Nova Scotia, Ontario, or British Columbia, Canada;
  • Minimum 5 years of demonstrated work experience as a Systems Engineer with experience with Naval/Marine Communications and/or Navigation Systems within the last 10 years; and
  • Language: English (Essential)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with the Royal Canadian Navy as a Naval Combat Systems Engineering Officer;
  • Experience in delivering marine in-service support of operational assets;
  • Previous experience working with a defense contract;
  • Demonstrated project management experience; and
  • Language: French (Desirable as a first or second language, with English second or first)

Physical Demands

  • Predominantly office work but will be required to occasionally work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships
  • May be required to undertake inspections on Naval ships which may involve involving bending and twisting, and working aloft

Special Position Requirements

  • Schedule: 40 hours per week
  • Physical Environment: Hybrid position – a mix of working from home and onsite (in office or on board DND ships at waterfront)
  • Travel: Occasional domestic or international travel maybe required in support of the ships

Pay Transparency

The anticipated Total Target Compensation (TTC), inclusive of annual salary and bonus eligibility, for this role is 886,138.88 - 116,785.73 - 154,432.71 CAD Annual​. The Company reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s status protected by local, provincial, and federal laws.
