Job Description

The Compositor role at ILM is a hybrid position requiring 2-3 days of on-site work and occasional remote work. Compositors are responsible for combining live-action and computer-generated elements to create visually stunning effects. This includes 2D tracking, matte extraction, layering, and color grading. The role demands a strong understanding of Nuke, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to meet deadlines while collaborating effectively with other artists. The successful candidate will have at least 3 years of VFX experience or 5 years without formal education, and a strong fine arts foundation is a plus.

Job Summary:

This role is considered Hybrid, which means the employee will work 2-3 days onsite at a Company designated location and occasionally from home.

Compositors combine live action and computer generated elements into visual effects shots that realize the vision and creative direction of the client and Visual Effects Supervisor. The Compositor helps maintain the aesthetic integrity and technical quality of the final image delivered to the client.

We are looking for a creative who reflects the innovative spirit, creative talent, production excellence, team-oriented mentality and passion for great filmmaking that define ILM.

What You’ll Do

  • Alongside Compositing Supervisor and VFX Supervisor, evaluates creative and technical approach for assigned shots

  • Performs all tasks associated with the Compositing process, including 2D tracking, matte extraction, layering of elements, and colour grading on moderately difficult to very difficult shots

  • Maintains the overall look, colour balance, and quality for assigned shots and sequences to create uniformity in all finished work

  • Ability to work collaboratively with artists from other disciplines
     

What We’re Looking For

  • At least 3 years relevant professional VFX experience and at least a college level diploma in computer graphics, fine arts, design, or photography, or related field; OR at least 5 years relevant professional VFX experience in lieu of education

  • Strong knowledge of Nuke

  • Strong aesthetic skills in judging photo-realism and color

  • Ability to work gracefully under pressure to meet deadlines

  • Strong sense of composition, color and design

  • Demo reel + shot breakdown required

  • Ideal candidate has strong fine arts foundation skills, such as photography and photographic lighting

  • Nice to have:

    • Familiarity with using Unix systems

    • Ability to write Nuke gizmos and/or plugins

    • Python and/or C++ experience

The hiring range for this position in Vancouver is C$98,800.00 to C$126,400.00 per year based on a 40-hour work week. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on business needs. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A full range of medical, financial, and/or other variable pay or benefits, may be offered dependent on the level and position offered.
