Job Description

The Data Center Facilities Engineer, Mechanical will operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical equipment in a data center environment. You will ensure safety rules and regulations are followed, provide root cause analysis for service failures, and implement continuous improvement initiatives. You will also coordinate vendor support for repairs and replacements, support project implementation, and develop a good understanding of the infrastructure design.
Must have:
  • Associate's degree or equivalent experience
  • 4 years of experience in HVAC and mechanical systems
  • Fluency in English and Japanese
  • Ability to work non-standard hours
Good to have:
  • Data center facilities certifications (CDCP, CDFOM, AOS)
  • Relevant licenses in Japan (Refrigeration Equipment Supervisor, Fire Protection Engineer, etc.)
  • Experience in complex mission-critical facilities
  • Experience maintaining critical mechanical systems (chiller, pump, cooling tower, etc.)
  • Understanding of multiple disciplines (mechanical, electrical, control, generator systems)

Minimum qualifications:

  • Associate's degree, trade school certification, or other certified training in a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 years of experience in operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting HVAC and mechanical systems of industrial facilities.
  • Ability to communicate in English and Japanese fluently to support client relationship management in this region.
  • Ability to work non-standard working hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Certification in data center facilities (e.g., CDCP, CDFOM, AOS) or relevant license/certification effective in Japan (e.g., Refrigeration Equipment Supervisor, Fire Protection Engineer, Building Environment and Sanitation Management Technician, Energy Manager).
  • Experience in complex mission-critical facility environments, including data centers, hospitals, production factories, etc.
  • Experience in performing maintenance on critical mechanical systems (e.g., chiller, pump, cooling tower, AHU, water treatment systems).
  • Understanding of multiple disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, control, and generator systems used in a data center environment.

About the job

The Data Center team designs and operates some of the most sophisticated electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and HVAC systems in the world. Facilities Technicians at Google data centers operate, monitor and support physical facilities conditions. Some of these duties will include heating and cooling of air and water, power supply, generators, UPS systems, electrical distribution and control and monitoring systems. You regularly help inspect, maintain and repair various data center systems such as piping and non-critical electrical or mechanical system components).

As an advocate for best practices, you develop creative approaches to reducing operational costs while improving overall data center efficiency. You ensure that environmental and safety standards are consistently met, identifying problems and making repairs quickly. In emergency situations or abnormal conditions, you manage data center performance issues and outages to minimize the recovery time from failures.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical equipment in a data center environment. Ensure safety rules and regulations associated with operating infrastructure.
  • Provide root cause analysis, recovery, prevention actions for service failure, continuous improvement on site, and operational efficiency, and minimize environmental impact.
  • Prepare and execute operation procedures, respond to work requests, and provide operational and technical expertise in required areas.
  • Coordinate vendor support in repairs and replacements, and support project implementation (e.g., site acceptance tests, factory acceptance tests, site inspection for defects, etc.).
  • Develop a good understanding of the infrastructure design and sequence of operation. Prepare and conduct training, sharing with the team.
