The Data Center Plant Engineer at Google designs, operates, and maintains sophisticated electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems. Responsibilities include monitoring data center systems, ensuring compliance with global standards, managing risk, and responding to emergencies. The role requires leading initiatives to reduce operational costs, improve efficiency, and minimize environmental impact. This involves working with various systems (HVAC, UPS, generators, electrical distribution) and collaborating with contractors. The engineer will also develop and validate new processes and procedures for critical equipment.
Must have:
  • Trade school qualification or certification
  • 10+ years HVAC/electrical experience
  • 5+ years data center experience
  • Knowledge of data center systems
  • Troubleshooting and maintenance skills
  • Communication with contractors

  • Deep knowledge of data center systems (feeders, transformers, etc.)

Minimum qualifications:

  • Trade school qualification or certification in a related field.
  • 10 years of experience in a HVAC, electrical, controls, water chemistry, generators, mechanical, or other similar technical domain.
  • 5 years of experience in a data center or facilities environment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems used in a data center environment (e.g., Feeders, Transformers, Generators, Switchgear, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, PDU/PMM units, Chillers, Air handling units, and CRAC units).
  • Knowledge of meters, devices, sensors, and troubleshooting utilizing standard hand tools, digital metering, or calibration/diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to communicate with contractors who perform maintenance or upgrade work on the data center systems.

About the job

The Data Center team designs and operates some of the most sophisticated electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and HVAC systems in the world. Facilities Technicians at Google data centers operate, monitor and support physical facilities conditions. Some of these duties will include heating and cooling of air and water, power supply, generators, UPS systems, electrical distribution and control and monitoring systems. You regularly help inspect, maintain and repair various data center systems such as piping and non-critical electrical or mechanical system components). You provide daily assistance to senior technicians as you read blueprints/schematics, conduct tours of systems and assess their working order.

As a master of exceptional practices, you develop creative approaches to reducing operational costs while improving overall data center efficiency. You ensure that environmental and safety standards are consistently met, identifying problems and making repairs quickly In emergency situations or abnormal conditions, you manage data center performance issues and outages to minimize the recovery time from failures.

As a Data Center Operations Plant Engineer, you will advocate excellent environmental practices. You will help the Data Center team design and operate sophisticated and efficient electrical and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. You will seek different approaches to reduce operational costs while improving efficiencies through the operation and maintenance of water pumps and treatment systems, HVAC, UPS, generators, electrical distribution, and control and monitoring systems.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $149,000-$223,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Lead efforts to test, validate, improve, and certify new processes and procedures for critical equipment operation for the data center domain of expertise.
  • Own efforts to perform compliance activities for a data center and analyze compliance results for data centers globally. Ensure regional and global teams are complying with project/schedule guidelines and Google design standards.
  • Lead efforts to monitor data center systems operations, control site activities to minimize risk, and to ensure effective response to any excursions.
  • Lead efforts to ensure all sites are following facility, maintenance, and standard programs globally while exhibiting strength in improvement to said policies and programs.
  • Own the development of strategies to keep operational costs to a minimum, improve efficiency, and reduce environmental impact at a site, along with driving site-level development of programs and initiatives.
