Job Summary
HHAeXchange is seeking a Director, Data Engineering to lead teams responsible for building and maintaining the core Analytics data platform. This role involves defining and executing the strategic roadmap for the enterprise data platform, leading cross-functional teams including data engineers, BI analysts, and data architects, and collaborating with senior leadership to translate business needs into scalable data solutions. The Director will oversee the design, implementation, and optimization of data pipelines, manage the development of the Data Lake, and ensure data infrastructure supports various use cases. Additionally, they will build and evolve a centralized BI function, own reporting tool architecture, and ensure data practices comply with healthcare regulations like HIPAA. The position also involves team building, project prioritization, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Travel up to 10% is required.
Must Have
- 10+ years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, or BI
- 5+ years in a people leadership role
- Proficiency in SQL, data modeling, and distributed data systems
- Experience with BI and reporting tools
- Understanding of healthcare data privacy and security (HIPAA, HITRUST)
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills

Job Description
Essential Job Duties
- Strategy & Leadership:
- Define and execute the strategic roadmap for our enterprise data platform, aligning with product, compliance, and business objectives.
- Lead and mentor a cross-functional team including data engineers, BI analysts, and data architects.
- Collaborate with senior leadership, product management, and other stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable data solutions.
- Advocate for data governance, privacy, and security in accordance with HIPAA and other healthcare regulations.
- Data Engineering & Architecture:
- Oversee the design, implementation, and optimization of scalable data pipelines (ETL/ELT) that support internal analytics and product features.
- Manage the development of our Data Lake implementation, consolidating data that originates in one of the 7 software platforms that we support into a single unified store of information
- Ensure data infrastructure supports near real-time and batch processing for diverse use cases including analytics, machine learning, and customer reporting.
- Business Intelligence & Reporting:
- Build and evolve a centralized BI function that supports self-service reporting and interactive dashboards for internal and external stakeholders.
- Own the architecture and lifecycle of reporting tools (e.g., Looker, Power BI, Tableau) and data visualization best practices.
- Establish KPI definitions, data quality standards, and reliable data access layers for cross-functional reporting.
- Compliance & Operations:
- Ensure all data practices comply with relevant regulations (HIPAA, SOC 2, HITRUST) and industry standards.
- Develop and manage SLAs for data availability, reliability, and accuracy.
- Define and implement monitoring, alerting, and observability across the data ecosystem.
- Team Building & Execution:
- Build a high-performing team through hiring, mentorship, career development, and performance management.
- Manage project prioritization, resource allocation, and execution timelines to deliver against commitments.
- Foster a culture of ownership, continuous improvement, and cross-functional collaboration.

Travel Requirements

Required Education, Experience, Certifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, or BI in high-scale SaaS or cloud environments.
- 5+ years in a people leadership role, ideally including Director-level experience managing diverse technical teams.
- Proven experience with modern data platforms and cloud-native technologies (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP, Snowflake, Databricks, dbt, Kafka).
- Strong proficiency in SQL, data modeling, and distributed data systems.
- Experience with BI and reporting tools (e.g., Looker, Tableau, Power BI) and setting up scalable reporting systems.
- Deep understanding of data privacy, security, and compliance frameworks relevant to healthcare (HIPAA, HITRUST, etc.).
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience working in a healthcare technology company or with clinical data (EHR, HL7/FHIR).
- Familiarity with machine learning operations and enabling data science workflows.
- Experience with DataOps, observability, and CI/CD practices for data platforms
