Responsibilities encompass strategy development, market analysis, compensation program design (base salary, incentives, merit increases), pay equity maintenance, policy development, variable pay program oversight, team leadership (compensation managers/analysts), reporting (sales metrics, compensation costs), sales team training, benefits program administration, vendor collaboration, compliance oversight (payroll, 401k, ERISA), budget management, and mentoring.
Must have:
  • Lead total rewards strategy development and execution.
  • Analyze market trends and competitive pay practices.

Job Summary:

The Director of Total Rewards is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and management of the organization’s total rewards programs, including compensation, benefits, retirement, variable sales incentives, payroll, recognition, and other employee rewards initiatives. This position ensures that the company’s total rewards strategy aligns with organizational goals, market trends, and regulatory requirements, while supporting employee engagement, retention, and recruitment.

 

What You'll Do:

  • Lead the development and execution of the company’s total rewards strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives, values, and competitive positioning in the marketplace.
  • Analyze market trends and competitive pay practices to ensure compensation and benefits programs are attractive, equitable, and effective.
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and management of base salary structures, incentive programs, and merit increases.
  • Ensure internal pay equity and external competitiveness by conducting regular compensation benchmarking studies.
  • Develop compensation guidelines and policies, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Design and oversee variable pay programs, such as bonus, equity options, and long-term incentive plans.
  • Lead a team of compensation managers and analysts in calculating all sales, operations, and managerial reporting including commissions, quota attainment, and other variable incentives. This includes reporting out on sales metrics by individual.
  • Work closely with accounting and finance to report commission payouts, bonuses, and other compensation costs related to monthly accruals and analyze over- or under-budgeting.
  • Provide training to sales managers and HR teams on the structure and mechanics of sales compensation plans.
  • Assist sales leaders in understanding how to use compensation tools effectively and ensure they are applying them correctly for team performance and motivation.
  • Develop and deliver regular reports on compensation and benefits trends, expenses, and employee satisfaction.
  • Ensure all compensation and benefits programs comply with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., FLSA, ACA, ERISA).
  • Direct the design and administration of the organization’s benefits programs.
  • Evaluate benefits offerings to ensure they are competitive and aligned with employee needs and business goals.
  • Collaborate with external vendors and consultants to optimize cost-effectiveness and ensure the highest quality of benefits offerings.
  • Oversee audits and reviews of compensation and benefits programs to ensure legal and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee the end-to-end payroll process, ensuring that all employees are paid accurately and on time including reviewing and approving payroll processing, including overtime, bonuses, and other adjustments.
  • Coordinate and manage the payroll team to ensure accurate data entry, calculations, and distribution of payroll.
  • Oversee the 401(k) and retirement programs including annual ERISA audit and compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws, including tax withholdings, garnishments, and benefits.
  • Lead, manage, and mentor a team of total rewards professionals to ensure high performance and career growth.
  • Develop and manage the budget for total rewards programs, ensuring cost efficiency while maintaining competitiveness and employee satisfaction.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

 

What You Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, or related field. A Master’s degree or professional certifications (e.g., CCP, GRP) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in compensation and benefits, with at least 5 years in a leadership role managing total rewards programs.
  • Strong knowledge of compensation and benefits best practices, trends, and legal regulations.
  • Expertise in HRIS systems, compensation software, and data analysis tools. Experience with CaptivateIQ and ADP is a plus.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated management skills with ability to effectively motivate and mentor a high performing team.
  • Strong process focus with demonstrated continuous improvement mentality.
  • Proven ability to influence senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Highly analytical and detail oriented, with an inquisitive ability for problem solving.
  • Ability to manage the stress of a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to meet the in-person requirements of the team and/or business needs.
