This EH&S Engineer role involves developing solutions to technical problems and daily tasks under the direction of the HSV EH&S Manager. The role offers an opportunity to build a strong understanding of environmental, health, and safety aspects related to rocket engine and component manufacturing, processing, and testing. Responsibilities include applying occupational health, facility safety, ergonomics, emergency preparedness, and hazardous waste management; conducting area inspections and audits; performing health and safety evaluations; planning and directing programs for a safe work environment; and evaluating risk management control technologies. The role requires working with regulatory agencies, and other company site and external occupational safety professionals.
Must have:
  • Hazardous waste management experience with RCRA and DOT training.
  • Bachelor's degree and 8+ years of safety, health, and environment experience.
  • Knowledge of Environmental regulations (air, water, waste, SPCC, EPCRA/SARA).
  • Experience with life safety programs (Confined space, control of hazardous energy).
  • Full understanding of OSHA General and Construction safety standards.

Job Details

This individual will work under the direction of the HSV EH&S Manager to develop solutions to assigned technical problems and assigned daily tasks.  Work is reviewed for sound technical judgement and overall adequacy.  In this role you will have an opportunity to build a strong understanding of environmental, health and safety aspects as they relate to rocket engine and component manufacturing, processing and testing.

Responsibilities:
  • 40% - Works with supervision and employees in applying occupational health, facility safety, ergonomics, emergency preparedness, and hazardous waste management.  Activities are performed in accordance with organization and program standards and procedures to foster a positive safety culture. Works with regulatory agencies, and other company site and external occupational safety professionals.
  • 20% - Conducts area inspections and audits and evaluates the impact of emerging issues and regulations on company operations to ensure compliance with regulatory and company policies in regard to safety, health, and environmental requirements to maintain 100% regulatory and company policy requirements.
  • 15% - Performs health and safety evaluations, investigations and methodologies for continual improvement and prevention of employee injuries/illnesses and hardware/process improvements throughout the site.  Coordinates resolutions, evaluates engineering design and performs safety analyses, ensuring appropriate selection of control measures and hazard mitigation.
  • 10% - Plans, develops, directs and assesses programs to achieve and maintain a safe and healthy work environment, with emphasis on facility safety programs and associated monitoring.
  • 15% - Evaluates existing or emergent risk management control technologies and provides information, regulatory interpretation, and technical expertise to management and employees.

Required Skills:
  • Hazardous waste management experience (current RCRA and DOT training preferred).
  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and 8+ years’ experience in safety, health and environment programs.
  • Experience/knowledge of Environmental regulations (i.e., air, water/storm-water, waste, SPCC, EPCRA/SARA) including permitting and compliance.
  • Experience with life safety programs (Confined space, control of hazardous energy, hot work, working at heights, etc.).
  • Full understanding of OSHA General and Construction safety and health standards is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (written & oral), with ability to resolve conflict, work with and as a team, be flexible and adaptable, have above average problem solving and analytical skills, and be proactive.
  • Familiar with root cause analysis, office and industrial ergonomics, industrial hygiene monitoring, SDS reviews and interpretations, and incident investigation methodology.
  • Must be able to obtain security clearance upon request.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a very fast paced, ever-changing work environment.
  • The ability and willingness to occasionally work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
  • Must possess mobility to work in a manufacturing environment along with a standard office setting, and able to use standard office equipment, including a computer.
  • Stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds.
  • Will require frequent walking, climbing, stopping, crouching, and/or bending in a manufacturing environment; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
  • May require the ability to travel by air or auto (<5%).
  • Will require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection and others as deemed necessary.
