What to Expect

Tesla is seeking an ambitious EHS Engineer to support our growing Research, Engineering & Design team to develop safe testing equipment.

In this role, you will support our engineers during a variety of tests: electrical, thermal, mechanical, and chemical abuse.

You will also be responsible for EHS programs for our engineering workshop and laboratory, with a focus on engineering controls, engagement of stakeholders, learning from events, training, and systems-level problem-solving.

The overall charter is achieving compliance and risk control within the company’s and regulatory agencies’ standards in environmental, health and safety. You must work well on both self-initiated projects and those driven by stakeholders.

This position is based ideally in Freiburg or potentially Berlin, Germany, and will require regional and international travel, given the geographical reach of the business and its laboratories across Europe.

What You’ll Do
  • Participate in R&D test development to balance product specifications, process control requirements, component selection, control architecture, and safety integration.
  • Integrate safety disciplines and best practices into the design and test workflow of new Tesla electronics and battery systems.
  • Analyze incident trends and use risk-assessment methods to identify continuous improvement projects that reduce injury, illness, and environmental impact events.
  • Interface with local regulatory agencies on permitting, reporting, and related issues.
  • Be a visible model in the field and teach, train, and coach business teams and support staff on fundamental EHS concepts and principles to reduce risk.
  • Develop and maintain a partnership with and serve as a key advisor on EHS matters to Tesla operations leaders and stakeholders, associates, EHS members, and contracting partners.
  • Identify operational gaps and creative solution facilitation, including identifying key stakeholders and driving innovative EHS solutions with cross-functional teams.
What You’ll Bring
  • Experience in physically applied engineering (laboratory testing, machines, innovations).
  • Knowledge/experience in machine safety and electrical safety standards.
  • Have great attention to detail, problem-solving skills, multi-task, and prioritizing.
  • Comfortable working in a highly fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform duties independently and remotely with minimal supervision.
  • The ideal candidate will also be a team player who can be proactive, creative, and innovative in approaching challenges.
  • Has strong English written and verbal communication skills. The German language is a big plus.
  • Certificate to work as Fachkraft für Arbeitssicherheit in Germany is a big plus.
  • A valid driver’s license and an acceptable safe driving record.
  • Willing to travel up to 40% of the time.
