Job Description

As a Thermal Systems Engineer, you will be pivotal in testing, analyzing, and optimizing thermal and HVAC systems for electric vehicles (EVs) and Electric Range Extended Vehicles (EREVs). Your responsibilities include leading the development of thermal management solutions, simulation and analysis to optimize performance, testing thermal components, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and preparing detailed design documentation. You will work in a team-oriented environment with the goal of improving system efficiency and reliability.

  • 3 years experience in thermal systems testing.
  • Proficiency in simulation tools and thermal system analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with testing thermal components.

Overview

As the development engineer in Thermal Systems, you will play a pivotal role in the testing, analysis, and optimization of thermal and HVAC systems for both EV and EREV vehicles. Working with a talented team of engineers, you will help ensure the efficiency, performance, and reliability of thermal components. This role demands strong leadership skills, a deep understanding of thermal engineering, and a passion for pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology.

What you’ll do

Become part of an iconic brand that is set to revolutionize the electric pick-up truck & rugged SUV marketplace by achieving the following:

Thermal System Development:

  • Lead the development of thermal management solutions for powertrain, cabin, and under hood thermal systems.
  • Proficient in refrigerant and thermal systems hardware/component (specialized in heat pump and battery cooling operation).
  • Knowledge of vehicle development cycle and capable establishing and managing development plans.

Simulation and Analysis:

  • Help establish detailed simulation and analysis to optimize the performance and efficiency of thermal components.
  • Implement design improvements based on simulation results to enhance overall system reliability.

Teamwork:

  • Works well in a team able to foster a collaborative and innovative work environment.
  • Must be capable of dealing with ambiguity and comfortable working with unknowns.

 Prototyping and Testing:

  • Coordinate the testing of thermal components to validate design performance on both bench and full vehicle properties.
  • Instrumentation of hardware and software.
  • Analyze test data and implement necessary adjustments to improve system efficiency and/or capability.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with power electronics, battery systems, control systems engineers, and integrate thermal solutions seamlessly.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to support the production and assembly of thermal components.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Prepare detailed design documentation, specifications, and reports for thermal system components.
  • Maintain accurate records of design changes and iterations.

Location & Travel Expectations:

  • This role will be based out of the Scout Motors location in Novi, Michigan.
  • The responsibilities of this role require attendance in office with in-person meetings and events regularly. 
  • Applicants should expect that the role will require the ability to convene with Scout colleagues in person and travel to participate in events on behalf of the company from time to time.

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Thermal Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3 years’ experience in thermal systems testing (engine cooling and/or battery cooling and/or thermal component protection experience).
  • Proficiency in simulation tools and analysis of thermal systems. Such as Amesim and GT Suite.
  • Hands-on experience with testing thermal components. Strong understanding of CAN/LIN/Ethernet communication protocols and instrumentation software SW (Canape, Canalyzer, Vehicle Spy, Inca)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.

Pay Transparency

This is a full-time, exempt position eligible to receive a base salary and to participate in an annual performance bonus program. Final salary offered will be determined based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience. The annual performance bonus program is preset and not candidate dependent.

Initial base salary range = $110,000.00 - $135,000.00
