ByteDance's Applied Machine Learning (AML) team seeks an Engineering Manager to spearhead the advancement of their AI infrastructure and recommendation platform. The role involves leading the design and development of cutting-edge LLM technology, overseeing experiments, implementing downstream applications, and collaborating with product teams. You will analyze performance bottlenecks, formulate solutions, and drive substantial impact on ByteDance's core businesses, including ads, search, and live/e-commerce ranking.
Must have:
  • Lead engineering team
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Jax)
  • Proven success improving core recommendation algorithms
  • Strong communication and technical leadership skills
  • Passion for solving complex problems
Good to have:
  • Publications at top AI conferences (ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, RecSys, KDD)
  • Expertise in sparse FTRL, FFM, and deep model parallelization

About the team: The Applied Machine Learning (AML) team serves as ByteDance's central AI organization. We conduct focused research and engineering, with the support of massive computation resources, to build and deploy state-of-the-art AI core technologies, including but not limited to LLM, recommendations, etc. Responsibilities: The mission of our AML team is to push the next-generation AI infrastructure and recommendation platform for the ads ranking, search ranking, and live & e-commerce ranking in our company. We also drive substantial impact on the core businesses of the company. - Lead to design methods and tools to push forward the state of the art in LLM. - Oversee the team to conduct experiments, including designing experimental details, writing reusable code, running evaluations, and organizing results. - Implement relevant downstream applications. Lead the team in creating tools to analyze bottlenecks and sources of instability, formulating and implementing effective solutions. - Collaborate with product teams, offering comprehensive solutions tailored to their specific requirements.
Qualifications
1. Experience in leading an engineering team 2. Familiar with at least one of the mainstream deep learning frameworks, like TensorFlow, Pytroch or Jax; familiar with their underlying frameworks and implementation mechanisms. 3. Had experience of improving core recommendation algorithms in real products. 4. Good communication and technical leadership skills. Strong sense of responsibility and good at communication and teamwork 5. Passionate about solving complex and challenging problems Preferred Qualifications: 1. Published papers at top conferences like ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, RecSys, and KDD. 2. Familiar with the parallelization of sparse FTRL, FFM, and deep models on large-scale coefficient data. 3. 【For Pay Transparency】Compensation Description (annually)

The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $224000 - $410000 annually.

Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and location. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units.

We cover 100% premium coverage for employee medical insurance, approximately 75% premium coverage for dependents and offer a Health Savings Account(HSA) with a company match. In addition to Flexible Spending Account(FSA) Options like Health Care, Limited Purpose and Dependent Care.

Our time off and leave plans are: 10 paid holidays per year plus 17 days of Paid Personal Time Off (PPTO) (prorated upon hire and increased by tenure) and 10 paid sick days per year as well as 12 weeks of paid Parental leave and 8 weeks of paid Supplemental Disability.
