Job Description

As Engineering Manager for the Asset Personalization Platform at Netflix, you'll lead a team building high-throughput, low-latency systems delivering personalized assets (artwork, trailers, metadata) to Netflix UI clients in real-time. You'll guide the development of a product platform enabling rapid creation of innovative, personalized member experiences. This involves collaborating with cross-functional teams (Content Creative, ML researchers, Product Management, etc.) to enhance the architecture, unlock new product capabilities, and drive business impact. The role demands strong technical skills, leadership, and communication abilities to mentor engineers, manage roadmaps, and connect team work to business needs.

The Opportunity: 
The Netflix user interface is enriched by a variety of assets, including artwork, trailers, synopses, and other metadata, which are crucial to enhancing the member experience. These assets provide essential context for recommended content, enabling members to make informed viewing choices. To optimize this experience, we personalize these assets, ensuring that the most suitable artwork, trailers, and more are displayed to align with each member's unique interests.
 

As Netflix expands its diverse catalog of movies, TV shows, games, and live content, we are committed to building a scalable platform that meets the asset requirements of these varied content types. The Asset Personalization Platform team is dedicated to developing high-throughput, low-latency systems that deliver personalized assets in real-time to Netflix UI clients. Our vision is to create a product platform that offers flexibility and customization of assets, empowering product engineering and machine learning teams to innovate and experiment with new member experiences at an accelerated pace while driving business impact. This team of distributed systems engineers collaborates with a wide array of cross-functional teams, including Content Creative teams, Machine Learning researchers, Product Management, Product Design, Data Engineering, and various product and client engineering teams.
 

To realize our vision, we are seeking an engineering leader to guide our team in developing a product platform that enables the rapid creation of innovative and personalized member experiences. This leader will be instrumental in advancing our asset personalization systems and driving Netflix's success. We are looking for someone who is technically proficient and can cultivate a collaborative and inclusive environment, mentoring a diverse team of engineers, including experienced engineers and newcomers. The ideal candidate should be a strategic thinker focused on enhancing our architecture to unlock new product capabilities and drive business impact. Above all, this leader should embody Netflix's core values, promoting creativity, curiosity, and excellence.


What we are looking for in you:

  • An engineering leader with 3 - 5 years of experience leading backend distributed systems teams.
  • Strong technical acumen and ability to act as a technical advisor to the team.
  • Experience building and operating distributed systems with a direct impact on the customer experience. Experience building product platforms is a bonus!
  • A passion for improving consumer experiences through strong partnerships with product leaders, ability to influence product direction and roadmaps.
  • A track record of hiring diverse, highly talented engineers and growing successful, highly impactful teams.
  • Excellence in communicating context with the team, stakeholders, partners, and leadership. Ability to drive the team’s roadmap by connecting the dots between your team’s work and business needs, managing expectations, and navigating competing priorities.
  • Domain experience with personalization, AB testing, machine learning, cloud computing, and Java.
  • A leadership style that prioritizes giving and receiving feedback, fostering new ideas, and empowering others without micromanagement.
  • A BS in Computer Science/Engineering or a related discipline.

The overall market range for roles in this area of Netflix is typically $190,000 - $920,000.
