Job Description

Lead a team developing the tonies mobile app, focusing on continuous discovery, usability, quality, and security. Collaborate with Product Management and market teams to improve development processes and align product development with company goals. Responsibilities include leading app strategy and development, exploring technical solutions, owning key initiative delivery, providing disciplinary leadership, ensuring high-quality assurance, and continuously improving agile methods. The ideal candidate has experience developing mobile apps used by hundreds of thousands of users, understands feature instrumentation, and has leadership experience in a collaborative environment. Strong interest in the product, hands-on software engineering skills, and emphasis on automated tests, CI/CD, and observability are essential.

tonies is the world’s largest interactive audio platform for children with around 8 million Tonieboxes and more than 100 million Tonies figurines sold. The intuitive and award-winning audio system has changed the way young children play and learn independently with its child-safe, wireless, and screen-free approach. As the original category creator in interactive audio for children, tonies stands apart in its pioneering approach and market leadership.

Tonieboxes have been activated in over 100 countries, the content portfolio includes more than 1,100 Tonies figurines in several languages. Since its inception, tonies has achieved significant milestones, including listing on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in November 2021 as well as a globally present team of over 550 dedicated professionals operating from various countries.

NOTE: This is an 8-month fixed-term contract position, available on a freelance basis only.

As an Engineering Manager Mobile (m/f/d) you will lead a highly skilled product team developing the tonies mobile app; continuous discovery, usability, quality and security are always your top priorities. In collaboration with other departments (especially Product Management & the market teams), you ensure that we continuously improve our development processes and align product development with company goals.

Your tasks and responsibilities will include:

As part of the product Trio (Product, Design, Engineering) you will lead the strategy and development of a robust and engaging app experience by contributing hypotheses based on strategy & customer insights, experimenting to validate impact while delivering a great user experience.
Explore technical solutions, assess feasibility and validate solutions cheaply while maintaining a vision to scale successful experiments.
Own the delivery of key initiatives that pay into the improvement of our key metrics and the overall user and business value
Disciplinary leadership of a team of experienced software developers in the spirit of transformational leadership - work towards a compelling vision with the team by guiding the team.
Ensure the continuous development of the engagement & retention-focused areas in our app.
Continuously improve the technical foundation, contribute to the system design, keep an eye on new technologies and ensure our app follows state-of-the-art practices.
Ensure consistently high-quality assurance through code reviews, documentation, etc.
Continuously drive the improvement of agile methods within the team.

What we are looking for:

You have experience in the development of a mobile application that’s been used by hundreds of thousands of users
You know how to instrument features so you can understand how much value users are getting from these features
You have already worked in an environment that involved collaboration with other teams and have gained some leadership experience in that environment.
You have a strong interest in the product you are developing and the people who use it.
You are still a hands-on software engineer and don’t want to stop writing code anytime soon.
You place great importance on automated tests, CI/CD, and observability.
APIs (REST or GraphQL) are like your native language.
As a true team player, you can deal with various characters and keep the big picture in mind during discussions.
