Engineering Manager (NoSQL Datastores)

We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager for our NoSQL Datastores Team within the Platform Engineering organization. You'll lead a diverse group of platform and software engineers who are responsible for our distributed data infrastructure, including Cassandra clusters and other NoSQL technologies (Redis, Elasticsearch). As our platforms experience rapid growth, you'll play a crucial role in building and mentoring a team that bridges infrastructure and application development, ensuring we deliver reliable, scalable solutions for our global customer base. 

You will make data-driven decisions to balance technical debt, feature development, and operational stability, effectively managing long-running technical projects that require you to focus on scalability, reliability and performance whilst building NoSQL platforms. As a people leader with high emotional intelligence, you will foster a culture of safety, trust, and proactive problem-solving. You will mentor and develop your team, focusing on their technical and professional growth while promoting automation to reduce manual toil. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills are essential, as you will articulate technical decisions and timelines clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, ensuring alignment and transparency across the organization. In this role, you will work closely with other platform teams (Databases, Streaming, Queuing) and product teams within Adyen to scale our No SQL offerings - that are at the core of the Adyen systems responsible for processing over a trillion euros worth of payments in 2024. 

What you will do

• Lead and mentor a team of platform and software engineers, fostering an inclusive environment where different technical perspectives thrive
• Drive technical strategy for our distributed data infrastructure, balancing immediate operational needs with long-term scalability goals
• Guide architectural decisions across both infrastructure and application domains, ensuring cohesive solutions that meet our growing platform demands
• Establish and optimize engineering processes that work effectively for both infrastructure and software development workflows
• Oversee the health and scaling of our Cassandra clusters and other distributed data stores that power Adyen's core services
• Manage team performance, career development, and growth while maintaining high technical standards
• Collaborate with product teams and stakeholders to align technical initiatives with business objectives
• Ensure smooth operation of production systems through effective on-call rotations and incident management

Who you are

• An experienced engineering leader with a strong technical background in distributed systems and a passion for building inclusive, high-performing teams
• 3+ years of experience managing software engineering teams, with demonstrated ability to bridge infrastructure and application development disciplines
• 8+ years of experience in Software Engineering industry in a fast paced tech environment
• Experienced in leading technical projects in a fast paced environment
• Deep understanding of distributed systems principles, particularly around databases like Cassandra, Redis, or Elasticsearch
• Track record of creating collaborative environments where engineers with different technical backgrounds can thrive and grow
• Strong technical judgment with the ability to guide architectural decisions while empowering team ownership
• Experience leading teams through production incidents and implementing systematic improvements
• Skilled at balancing technical excellence with practical delivery, ensuring both reliability and innovation
• Excellent communicator who can translate between technical specialties and stakeholder groups
• Experience with Kubernetes and cloud-native technologies
• Professional proficiency in English
