Job Description

The Lead Exhibition Art & Scenic Technician will support the Exhibition Manager in keeping the Exhibition operational and in line with Meow Wolf brand standards. This includes remediating any structural, aesthetics, or functional issues observed or reported by other team members to ensure that the visitor experience remains consistent and of the highest quality.

How You Will Do It…

  • Maintain, repair and improve exhibit installations.
  • Inspect and diagnose problems, propose solutions and facilitate project completion.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure that high traffic areas are protected.
  • Oversee maintenance inventory, order supplies as necessary.
  • Recognize when a job is above their skill level and engage the appropriate trade experts.
  • Facilitate repairs using various art disciplines that require integration with architecture, heavy fabrication processes, technology, narrative arts, and/pr performing arts.
  • Document all upgrades and changes in appropriate internal and external databases.
  • Conduct exhibition work during operating hours as a performance character to elevate the guest experience.
  • Lead exhibition maintenance team, setting the example of a job well done.
  • Other duties as assigned, including cross-training into other departments.

To be successful in this role…

  • Experience with the creation of permanent art installations or exhibitions.
  • Ability to understand artistic and aesthetic visual languages and restore visual works of art to their original state.
  • Ability to adapt to the original artistic intent of each project, follow instructions, and pay attention to detail with precision.
  • Monitor, track, perform and delegate work orders pertaining to the exhibit
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions from artists/fabricators regarding processes and aesthetics.
  • Experience manipulating materials by hand in a sculptural/artistic fashion.
  • Proficiency with all drywall processes, as well as concrete and stucco processes.
  • A strong understanding of mounting and anchoring fixtures in a variety of substrates.
  • Experience with a variety of paint application techniques including spray, brush, and roll, as well as matching paint color/sheen.
  • Experience with wood fabrication and assembly.
  • Experience understanding basic floor plans, elevations, and conceptual renderings.
  • Knowledge of metalworking experience including steel welding, cutting, and grinding.
  • Ability to follow and enforce OSHA and company-wide safety rules.
  • Prior work experience in a physically demanding field.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and be adaptable to the changing demands of a rapidly scaling startup company.
  • Ability to remember and communicate information in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional organizational skills and an ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment.
  • Experience anticipating challenges and working proactively to solve complex problems utilizing the above-mentioned skillset.
  • 5+ years of working in art production, ideally with experience in carpentry, finish work or a related field.
  • 3+ years of interfacing directly with creatives.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • OSHA 10 Certification.

It would be nice to have…

  • An appreciation for the arts.
  • Prior work experience in themed entertainment, museum, recreation facility, or other public space.

Work environment & physical demands…

  • This is a full-time position, working a minimum of 40 hours a week. It requires a flexible schedule to accommodate both times the exhibit is closed to the public as well as normal operating hours. Evening, overnight and weekend work are required as job duties demand.
  • This position requires supervisory responsibility.
  • Infrequent travel (less than 10%) may be required for this position.
  • This job primarily operates in an indoor setting with exposure to noisy environments, dim lighting, strong visual effects including strobing lights, special effects, smoke machines and small and/or enclosed spaces. Outdoor settings may also be required for special events or as needed for maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Moving in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including small, enclosed spaces.
  • Remaining in a stationary position for prolonged periods.
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Positioning or moving objects up to 75 pounds.
  • Use of maintenance tools and cleaning equipment, includes use of cleaning agents and chemicals.
  • Use of access equipment such as ladders and man lifts.
  • Ability to operate and manipulate power tools, specialty lighting, fog machine, computers, rigging equipment, projectors and all other exhibit technical equipment as needed.
