Job Description

As a Principal Software Engineer, Graphics at SIE, you will lead the development and integration of graphics frameworks for next-generation mobile applications. You'll collaborate with various teams (Product Management, Architects, Engineering, Game Studios) to design, build, and optimize rendering, memory consumption, and overall system health. Responsibilities include leading framework development, bridging Android with GPU drivers, collaborating with game studios and UI designers, presenting designs in technical forums, identifying performance bottlenecks, and optimizing GPU shaders. This role requires extensive experience in AAA and mobile game development, a deep understanding of graphics techniques, 3D mathematics, rendering algorithms, and shader development, as well as expertise in C++, multi-threaded programming, and Unreal Engine.

Principal Software Engineer, Graphics

San Mateo, CA

 

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will be a lead member of the team, partnering with Product Management, Architects, Engineering, and Game Studios. You have extensive hands-on technical expertise coupled with ingenuity, broad industry knowledge and excellent communication skills. And you will use your understanding of Android, game engines, graphics, GPUs, and constraints to help pave the way for future innovation on our platforms.

You will drive the graphics platform direction for our next-generation mobile application, applying industry standard best practices and implementation to fluid performant experiences with maximum extensivity.  Participate in product road-map discussions, identify key areas for improvement in the product, and incorporate these goals into ongoing and future development initiatives.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead, design, build, and integrate graphics frameworks to streamline development across mobile teams, enhancing efficiency and collaboration.

  • Design and develop code and frameworks that bridge between Android and the underlying GPU drivers and hardware to accelerate and optimize rendering, enhance memory consumption, CPU and GPU efficiency, crash rates, and overall system health.

  • Collaborate closely with global game studios, teams of UI designers, and product managers to translate requirements into actionable work packages, creating graphics frameworks and optimizations.

  • Represent the team in technical forums by presenting designs, sharing knowledge, and contributing insights to other Sony development groups.

  • Identify performance bottlenecks and craft solutions to improve customer delight.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent practical experience.

  • 10+ years of experience in developing AAA and mobile games or graphics platforms.

  • Have a profound understanding of state-of-the-art graphics and lighting techniques.

  • Have a solid understanding of 3D mathematics, rendering algorithms, and shader development.

  • Have up-to-date knowledge of APIs such as DirectX 11/12 and, OpenGL 4.x and Vulkan.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead real-time rendering, GPU and CPU profiling, and optimizing GPU shaders.

  • Expert in C++ and other applicable programming and shader language

  • Expert in multi-threaded programming in Unreal and other game engines

  • Have taken a project from scoping requirements to the actual launch of a product at global scale

  • Ability to build strong partnerships with architects and engineers to influence technology decisions

  • Accel at documenting designs, implementation, and tests for international teams

  • Experience with open-source contributions, especially library development

Please note that the base pay range may vary in line with our hybrid working policy and individual base pay will be determined based on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location.
