As an Industry Mentor in Game Development at RealXP Lab, you will guide students through real-world programming assignments from indie game studios. Responsibilities include collaborating with studios, preparing assignments, conducting office hours, providing personalized mentorship, facilitating stand-ups, delivering code reviews, and offering actionable feedback. You will also track student progress, foster collaboration, and help them leverage online resources. The role requires shaping the program's direction, innovating solutions, and refining the curriculum to enhance the student experience. This is a part-time, remote, 12-week contract position requiring approximately 8 hours per week.

RealXP Lab is an experimental program offers students a unique opportunity to work on real programming assignments sourced directly from indie game studios—not hypothetical exercises. With mentorship-driven learning, office hours, detailed code reviews, and weekly stand-ups, it delivers a professional game development experience in a structured, supportive format focused on growth and industry readiness. Whether they’re professionals exploring a career shift into game development or passionate individuals pursuing their dream, this program equips them with the practical skills and authentic experience to take the next step.

As a tutor, you’ll not only guide our inaugural cohort of students but also play a pivotal role in shaping the direction and impact of the program.

This is a part-time remote role, requiring approximately 8 hours per week for 12 weeks.

Key responsibilities

  • Collaborate with partnering game studios. Scope and prepare student assignments.

  • Conduct weekly office hours. Provide personalized mentorship and address individual learning.

  • Facilitate weekly stand-ups. Track progress, encourage collaboration, and foster accountability.

  • Deliver in-depth code reviews. Offer actionable, industry-standard feedback to improve student projects.

  • Guide students in leveraging online resources and best practices. Help them master game development concepts and explore specific topics that they’re interested in more deeply.

  • Work closely with the program team. Tackle unknowns, innovate solutions, and refine the curriculum to enhance the student experience.

Qualifications

  • Industry expertise. 7+ years of professional experience in game development, with a strong portfolio showcasing shipped games or significant contributions.

  • Technical mastery. Proficiency in game engines (e.g., Unity, Unreal Engine) and programming languages (e.g., C++, C#, Python), with deep expertise in at least one key area of game development such as gameplay programming, systems design, AI, physics simulation, graphics programming, networking, tools/pipeline development, or sound integration/engineering.

  • Mentorship experience. Previous experience teaching, mentoring, or managing others in related fields, whether in a professional, academic, or volunteer setting.

  • Communication skills. Exceptional ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to students.
