The Island Environmental Steward is responsible for assisting with managing the receipt, processing, and disposal of all general, recyclable, and hazardous waste on Disney's private island in the Bahamas. This role includes operating and maintaining waste management equipment, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and supporting waste diversion goals. You will report to the Environmental Manager
Responsibilities:
• Receive, process, store and transfer waste and recyclables on board the island.
• Monitor Company Waste Management Policy, regarding separation
• Operate and clean all waste related equipment and facilities
• Responsible for overseeing the cleanliness, storage, and general upkeep of waste handling and storage areas.
• Prepares hazardous and oily waste for transfer as per D.O.T and RCRA regulations with regards to loading, labeling, storage, use, and proper transfer/disposal.
• Provides weights and/or volumes of recyclables and wastes to be transferred from the island to the Island Environmental Manager.
• Provides weights and/or volumes of waste incinerated on the island and sends reports to the Island Environmental Manager.
• Completes a weekly inventory of consumables used in the waste handling areas and provides a list of orders to the Island Environmental Manager.
• Responsible for monitoring pest activity in the waste management areas and recording and reporting findings to the Island Landscaping Manager and Island Environmental Manager.
• Verifying that the waste processing equipment in the waste handling areas is in good condition and reports to the Island Environmental Manager any maintenance issues with equipment.
• Oversees the feeding of the incinerators and that proper practices are in place to avoid any prohibited items from being inserted in the incinerators
• See that waste handling procedures are in accordance with all relevant regulations (USDA, RCRA, Bahamian Environmental laws).
• Become familiar with all safety and technical equipment used in the waste management facility.
• Critical role in assisting the company in meeting our waste diversion goals by seeing that as much materials are recovered as possible and not sent to landfill.
• Identifying and bringing forward new processes and procedures to improve waste management and recycling onboard.
• Follow the terms of the employment contract.
• Is familiar with and complies with the island’s SMS and LOGs, including the safety and environmental policy.
• Promotes the island’s waste management and environmentality programs.
• Emergency Duties as specified in the ship Assembly Plan
• SMS – uphold the general safety management responsibilities in areas and operations under their control.
Basic Qualifications:
• Minimum of one to two years’ experience in Environmental Management or related field
• Knowledge of hazardous materials
• High School Diploma
• Proficient in Windows applications and email
• Legally authorized to work in the Bahamas
• Strong planning and organizational skills
• Knowledge of Safety and Environmental practices
