Job Description

Virtuos' Black Shamrock studio seeks a Lead Environment Artist for AAA game projects. Responsibilities include creating realistic 3D environments, optimizing assets, ensuring artistic direction consistency, mentoring junior artists, streamlining production, identifying/solving project risks, collaborating with designers, task management (Jira, Hansoft, Basecamp), and participating in hiring/reviews. The ideal candidate possesses at least 5 years of game industry experience (1+ year in leadership, at least one shipped AAA title), exceptional portfolio, Unreal Engine expertise, modular kit creation skills, and strong communication/leadership skills.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Black Shamrock is looking for a Lead Environment Artist to be part of our creative team and work on ambitious projects. The ideal candidate has a strong technical understanding of environment asset and level creation, can easily communicate with other disciplines within the development team and is able to take creative direction from the Art Director and Creative Director. Ability to mentor less experienced members of the team and assist with managerial tasks is required.  

Responsibilities

  • Create exceptional and realistic 3D environments for AAA projects 
  • Ensure all environments are optimised and built in accordance with the project's technical specifications. 
  • Review and deliver work in accordance with the project's artistic direction, and ensure unified look and consistent quality across all game environments 
  • Develop knowledge and expertise within their team while furthering their own performance and skill base.  
  • Help set up level art best practices and streamline production processes. 
  • Identify project risks and problems and suggest relevant solutions. 
  • Provide mentorship, feedback, and training to others on the team. 
  • Partner with design team to support encounters, narrative elements and objectives. 
  • Prioritise, plan and organise tasks for themselves and their team in conjunction with the Producer. 
  • Delegate and assign work to team members using tracking tools such as Jira, Hansoft and Basecamp. 
  • Assist with interviews and performance reviews. 

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years of games industry experience with at least 1 year in an art leadership role (shipped at least 1 AAA console title). 
  • An outstanding portfolio demonstrating your environment work. 
  • Thorough understanding of the game creation process. 
  • Expert knowledge and practical experience in game engines, Unreal Engine in particular.  
  • In-depth experience creating modular kits for buildings and structures.  
  • Comprehensive understanding of effective asset creation and optimization. 
  • Expert knowledge in a 3D modeling software such as Maya, 3DSMax and Blender 
  • Sculpting software such as ZBrush and Mudbox are a bonus.  
  • Excellent knowledge in material and texture creation such as Substance Painter and Photoshop and a comprehensive understanding of PBR pipelines.  
  • Previous experience with procedural workflows is beneficial.  
  • Strong sense of scene composition and visual storytelling, with a strong eye for lighting, colour and detail.  
  • Passion for pushing the state of the art in asset fidelity and production techniques. 
  • Be proactive and self-motivated, work without direct supervision. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Leadership, team and people management skills. 
  • International travel may be required as part of the role.
