Job Description

The Lead Roto/Paint Artist at ILM is responsible for ensuring the paint/roto team delivers all elements timely. This role involves assisting producers and supervisors with bidding and scheduling, attending dailies and production meetings, assigning shots to artists, providing clear direction and prioritizing tasks, monitoring progress, motivating the team, and identifying/solving problems. The Lead Artist will also conduct quality control, perform paint/roto work on complex shots as needed, interview potential candidates, and mentor less experienced artists. A minimum of 4+ years of feature film VFX experience (excluding stereo conversion) is required, along with Nuke expertise and strong leadership and communication skills.

Your role?

The Lead Roto/Paint Artist is responsible for making sure the paint/roto team delivers all the requested elements in a timely fashion and acts as liaison between Production and the crew.

What will you be doing?

  • Assists the Producer, CG Supervisors & Production Managers with bidding and scheduling  

  • Attends Dailies and follows up with team regarding their notes, fixes, etc.  

  • Attends Production meetings  

  • Assigns shots to appropriate artists  

  • Provides clear direction and priorities to crew  

  • Monitors shot and sequence progress  

  • Motivates and empowers crew to meet deadlines  

  • Identifies problems and effectively implements solutions  

  • Quality control on elements delivered to compositors  

  • Fast and efficient paint/roto on complex shots as needed or time allows  

  • Interviews and reviews potential candidates when required.

  • Mentors less experienced artists 

To be a contributing member of this team, you will have a mix of these skills:

  • At least 4+ years on feature film VFX work alone, not including stereo conversion experience 

  • Must have Nuke experience 

  • Demonstrated leadership qualities 

  • Strong communicator with artist, supervisors, and managers 

  • Strong time management in delivering shots 

  • Solid organizational skills for priority shot task requests 

  • Team player who takes direction well 

  • Dependable under pressure with attention to detail 

  • Professional in all dealings with Production, Sup and crew
