Job Description

As a Lead Software Engineer in Identity Engineering at The Walt Disney Company, you'll lead a squad responsible for building and maintaining CIAM capabilities across Disney's platforms (D+, Hulu, ESPN+, Parks). This role involves leading the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of microservices and lambdas in a multi-region cloud environment. You'll champion Agile methodologies, mentor engineers, and collaborate with various stakeholders. The Security Services squad focuses on securing consumer-facing APIs by implementing real-time threat detection and mitigation strategies. Responsibilities include leading engineering ceremonies, making technical and architectural decisions, and influencing the roadmap for your squad and team.
Must have:

  • Promote and support Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban)
  • Mentor engineers
  • JVM language (Java, Scala, Kotlin) proficiency
  • Cloud provider experience (AWS, GCP, Azure)
Good to have:

  • OOP and FP best practices
  • AWS, Terraform, IaC best practices

Job Summary

As a Lead Software Engineer, you will be responsible for leading an engineering squad within the Identity Engineering organization. You will be empowered to make technical and architectural decisions, and to influence the roadmap for your squad and the wider team, working in partnership with your peers across Product, Project Management and Engineering.

You will contribute to and be part of an engaging, dynamic and inclusive engineering organization, grounded in scrum and agile practices, CI/CD, great collaboration, functional programming and motivated by a commitment to continuous learning and improvement.

Identity Engineering delivers Consumer Identity and Access Management (CIAM) capabilities across The Walt Disney Company (TWDC) including but not limited to: D+, Hulu, ESPN+, and Parks. Identity Engineering squads build and run high-traffic and globally replicated systems which form an integral and visible part of every user’s journey at Disney properties.

The Security Services squad are responsible for making sure consumer-facing application programming interfaces (APIs) are kept secure by making real-time decisions to block malicious traffic using various mechanisms including but not limited to: traffic shaping and completely automated public turing tests to tell computers and humans apart (CAPTCHA) challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of stateful microservices and lambdas in a multi-region cloud environment.

  • Promote and support Agile methodologies such as Scrum, Kanban, and Scrumban by leading regular ceremonies such as stand-up, retrospectives and sprint planning.

  • Mentor engineers within your squad (and beyond!) to help them improve their technical ability and build their profile within and outside of the organization.

  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, QA, Operations, and other stakeholders to understand requirements and articulate technical decisions and outcomes.

Required Skills

  • Familiarity with at least one of the following Java Virtual Machine (JVM) languages: Java, Scala, or Kotlin.

  • Familiarity with at least one of the following cloud providers: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Compute (GCP), or Microsoft Azure.

Desirable Skills

  • Familiarity with the Scala programming language and popular frameworks such as: Cats, Cats Effect, ZIO, and http4s.

  • Familiarity with both object oriented programming (OOP) and functional programming (FP) best practices.

  • Familiarity with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Terraform, and infrastructure as code (IaC) best practices.

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience.

  • Minimum of 7 years related work experience.


The hiring range for this position in Los Angeles is $152,200 to $204,100 per year, in NYC/Seattle is $159,500 to $213,900 per year and in San Francisco is $166,800 - $223,600 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
