The Machine Learning Engineer will join the team responsible for researching and applying machine learning to game development. The role involves exploring areas like generative animations, automated testing using reinforcement learning agents, and multi-modal language models to improve developer efficiency. This includes diving into various technology stacks like Python, C#, C++, and Rust. The engineer will collaborate with artists, designers, and other engineers to deliver impactful solutions, stay updated with the latest research, and contribute to machine learning projects with a focus on applied research and impactful solutions to our customers.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • 2+ years of engineering experience in Python and a statically typed language.
  • 1+ years of experience as a Machine Learning Engineer.
Good to have:
  • Experience working in a cross-functional team.
  • A growth mindset and strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.

The bar to deliver world-class games continues to rise, driven by advantages in better hardware and software capabilities. Along with optimizing game development engines, developing infrastructure and workflows for efficient remote and hybrid development, brings new opportunities and engineering challenges that all studios are facing today. Solving these challenges is critical to enabling efficient hybrid teams as well as external globally distributed development partners who help scale during peak phases of development. At The Coalition Studio, through our work on the acclaimed Gears of War franchise, we are tackling these problems head-on by leading engine innovation, developing technical showcase technologies, and delivering world-class workflows, tools and features that are adopted across the wider Xbox Game Studios organization.

 

Machine Learning as a focus area has exploded over the past few years and it has been exciting to see so many ways in which it can be applied to games development. The Coalition is looking to hire a Machine Learning Engineer to join the team responsible for exploring these areas of research and directly applying them to impact our game development process. We directly support the team by finding ways to improve developer efficiency, allowing our game designers, animators and engineers to focus on what they do best. Some areas we are exploring are generative animations, automated testing using reinforcement learning agents, and multi-modal language models. This candidate can wear many hats and is comfortable diving into different technology stacks, including languages like Python, C#, C++, and Rust.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience in Python AND at least one statically typed language like Java/C#/C++/Rust
    • OR equivalent experience
  • 1+ years’ experience as a Machine Learning Engineer OR equivalent professional experience relevant to the responsibilities above
  • Experience with modern deep learning models, techniques and frameworks

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a cross-functional team.
  • A growth mindset and highly capable problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communicator; ability to work closely with other high-caliber engineers and artists.
  • Demonstrates a strong ability to work independently, taking ownership of tasks and driving them to completion

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $83,600 - CAD $159,600 per year.
