The New York Times is seeking an experienced and dynamic newsletter editor for its Food and Cooking team. This role involves producing and editing newsletters, collaborating with Product and Newsletter teams to ensure reader engagement, and informing newsletter strategy by pioneering new ideas and formats. The editor will support the launch of additional newsletter products. Key responsibilities include editing daily and weekly newsletters, managing deployment, creating production calendars, supporting newsletter launches or redesigns, generating ideas for improving newsletter experience, coordinating with cross-functional partners on shared initiatives, reporting on newsletter performance data, collaborating with other newsletter editors, and editing visual assets. The position requires a commitment to journalistic independence and the mission to seek truth and help people understand the world. The editor will report to the Assistant Editor overseeing newsletters.
Must have:
  • 5+ years of journalism experience
  • 2+ years of experience with newsletters for a major media brand
  • Experience growing newsletter audiences
  • Data fluency and experience with analytics tools
  • Editing and writing skills
  • Ability to work with writers/reporters
  • Ability to coordinate with a large team

  • Experience working with other desks in a newsroom
  • Experience with multiple story forms
  • Creativity and desire to experiment
  • Love of food and home cooking knowledge
  • Strong visual sense and familiarity with food photography

About the Role

We're looking for an experienced and dynamic newsletter editor to join the Food and Cooking team. You will produce and edit NYT Cooking/Food newsletters within our department, partnering with our Product and Newsletter teams to ensure our newsletters are connecting with readers and serving their needs. We'll also look to this editor to inform newsletter strategy, pioneering new ideas and formats, and support the launch of additional newsletter products. You have experience executing newsletter strategy, with several demonstrated wins; line editing skills and a knack for writing engaging copy and subject lines/headlines; a collaborative, can-do approach; and a love of food. 

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Edit and produce daily and weekly newsletters, manage accurate deployment, create lineups/production calendars that support editorial excellence and strategic growth
  • Support any/all newsletter launches (or redesigns, or relaunches) for NYT Cooking/Food
  • Create ideas for newsletter formatting, special initiatives and other ways we might improve on our newsletter experience to improve engagement and conversion funnels, retain subscribers, and reduce churn.
  • Coordinate with our partners across the Cooking Product and Newsletters teams, including data analysts, product and marketing managers, on shared initiatives and key moments to ensure the newsletters reach new audiences and serve NYT Cooking goals.
  • Help report data and insights on newsletter performance to stakeholders across the company
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other newsletter editors and desks in the newsroom 
  • Edit visual assets (images, gifs, slideshows) for Cooking newsletters
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  • You will report to the Assistant Editor who oversees our newsletters

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of journalism experience
  • 2+ years of experience working on newsletters for a major media brand
  • Experience growing high-quality newsletter audiences
  • Data fluency and experience with newsletter analytics tools and email service provider platform tools
  • Editing and writing skills and the ability to work in a conversational medium while still applying The Times's rigorous editorial guidelines 
  • Experience working directly with writers/reporters
  • Ability to coordinate with a large team

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience navigating and working with other desks within a newsroom
  • Experience pursuing multiple story forms and formats
  • Creativity and a desire to experiment 
  • A love of food and some home cooking knowledge
  • Strong visual sense and a familiarity with food photography
