The Senior Optical Instrumentation Architect will specify, design, and validate novel measurement systems for next-generation light field cameras and 3D displays used in metrology applications. Responsibilities include defining instrument specifications based on metrology requirements, designing optical system architectures, benchmarking various optical architectures, and collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to build and validate prototypes. Data collection and analysis are also crucial aspects of this role. The position requires a strong theoretical and experimental background in optical engineering, experience with optical instrument design, manufacturing, and operation for metrology applications, and proficiency in data analysis using Matlab/Python.
Must have:
  • Industry R&D background (5+ years)
  • Strong theoretical/experimental background in Optical Engineering
  • Advanced knowledge in design, manufacturing, and operation of optical instruments for metrology applications
  • Experience writing technical specifications for optical systems
  • Data analysis using Matlab/Python
  • Calibration and manufacturing of optical instruments
  • Experience with depth reconstruction (e.g., stereographic cameras)
  • Development of 3D displays, 3D sensors, Lidar, Shack-Hartmann sensors, Optical tomography, or Holography
  • Self-motivated, excellent communication skills
Good to have:
  • Experience with optical design tools (Zemax, Code V)
  • Experience with mechanical CAD tools (Solidworks, Siemens NX, Autodesk Inventor)
  • Ability to leverage opto-mechanical FEA results
  • Knowledge of optical manufacturing & assembly limits
Project description

The role of a Senior Optical Instrumentation Architect is to specify, design and validate novel measurement systems. The candidate will work in a group of scientists, responsible for developing next-generation light field cameras and 3D displays for metrology applications, including hardware, software, instruments and fixtures.

Responsibilities

Definition of instrument’s specifications based on metrology requirements

Optical system architecture of novel light field camera and 3D displays.

Benchmarking of various optical architectures to optimise value proposition for specific metrology use case.

Work as a part of an interdisciplineary team to design, build and validate proof-of concept prototypes.

Data collection and analysis for first prototypes

Skills

Must have

Industry R&D background with at least 5 years work experience outside of academia

Strong theoretical and experimental background in Optical Engineering

Advanced knowledge and experience in design, manufacturing and operation of optical instruments for metrology applications.

Experienced in writing technical specification for optical systems

Data analysis using Matlab and/or Python (Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib)

Familiar with calibration and manufacturing of optical instruments

Hands-on experience in calibrating imaging optical systems, including depth reconstruction (e.g. stereographic cameras)

Proven track record in the development of at least one of the following technologies:

3D Lenticular displays

3D Depth Sensors and Lidar

Shack-Hartmann Sensors

Optical tomography, holography

Self-motivated, independent, and dedicated.

Excellent English, Communication and presentation skills.

Nice to have

Hands-on experience in optical design tools (Zemax, Code V) are a plus.

Hands-on experience in mechanical CAD tools (Solidworks, Siemens NX, Autodesk Inventor) are a plus.

Ability to leverage opto-mechanical FEA results to the optical model is a plus

Knowledge about optical manufacturing & assembly limits and artifacts is a plus
