The role involves designing and layering outside plant facilities such as conduit, fiber optic cables, manholes, and poles. The responsibilities include assisting in the planning, analysis, and recommendations for new construction or removal of outside plant network structures, interacting with municipalities, reviewing site surveys, and designing to avoid facility conflicts. The engineer will also be responsible for completing pole loading and anchoring analysis, requesting permits, and translating field notes into engineering design drawings.
Must have:
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, ARAMIS, GIS, O-Calc and IQGeo.
  • Telco engineering and design experience.
  • Knowledge of outside plant facilities placement.
Good to have:
  • Experience with GPON and Corning Flexnap products.
  • Knowledge of encroachment permits and traffic control permits.

Job Summary: ·        This position creates and modifies detailed drawings using CAD and QGIS tools and software from sketches, layouts or notes provided by field engineering. ·        Creates and contributes to high-level design to facilitate placement or building outside plant facilities. ·        Checks drawings and system inputs for correctness and conformance to standards. ·        Works with engineers, project manager and clients regarding model accuracy, design, and industry-standard and client specific drafting. May work with system management including file maintenance, backup, and storage and records research and updates.   Essential Function: ·        Designing, drawing and layering outside plant facilities in AutoCAD, GIS and client systems.  Facilities include but are not limited to conduit, fiber optic and copper cables (aerial, buried and underground), manholes, hand holes, and poles. ·        Assist in the planning, analysis, and recommendations in support of new construction or removal of outside plant network structures and facilities.  ·        Interact with the local municipalities, Telco engineers and construction/maintenance forces to acquire OSP Records, ICGS, Assessor Maps, map info, AIS, and Construction Prints. ·        Review site surveys and translate field notes to develop and update conduit/ cable engineering design drawings in AutoCAD. NDS or other client drawing system. ·        Design avoiding facility conflicts in public right-of-way, private easements, and existing utilities such as water, sewer, electric, gas, and other underground and aerial utilities. ·        Complete pole loading, bonding & grounding and anchoring analysis when placing aerial facilities. ·        Request and obtain permits from city, county, state, and local municipalities along with Traffic Control and specialty permits (e.g., UPRR, Caltrans, etc.), easement right away and various environmental permits.   Minimum Job Requirements: ·        Proficient in AutoCAD, ARAMIS, GIS, O-Calc and IQGeo engineering tools (Aramis and IQGeo is a plus). ·        Telco engineering and design experience including reading and creating outside plant drawings, conduit prints, permit drawings and applications. o   Fundamental knowledge of placement, removal and splicing of outside plant facilities (aerial, buried and underground) including but not limited to conduit, fiber optic and copper cables, manholes, hand holes, and poles, pole loading, and bonding & grounding.  o   2 years or more of telecom design experience is strongly preferred or associate or an bachelor’s degree in a related field. ·        A thorough understanding and experience in the outside plant telecom industry, public right-of-way, private easements, and existing utilities such as water, sewer, electric, gas, and other underground and aerial utilities.  ·        Knowledgeable in city, county, state, and local municipalities encroachment permits, Traffic Control and specialty permits (e.g., UPRR, Caltrans, etc.), easement right away and various environmental permits are highly desired. ·        Preferred experience with GPON and Corning Flexnap products is a plus. ·        Proficient in MS Office; including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook. ·        Must have excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills for interfacing with different work groups internally or externally. ·        Be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. ·        Must be self-motivated and self-starter. ·        Demands Sitting for extended periods of time while viewing a computer monitor and performing various desk work.  ·        Dexterity of hands and reaching to operate keyboard/calculator and file documents. ·        Occasional lifting and carrying of up to 25 lbs. ·        Vision requires eyesight sufficiently strong enough to permit extended close work and normal color perception.
