The New York Times is seeking a versatile, experienced correspondent based in Phoenix to cover the Southwest and collaborate with the West coverage team. The Phoenix reporter will identify and pursue story ideas in the region and contribute to major stories. The role requires strong listening skills, collaboration, and a deep network of sources. Responsibilities include producing a range of work from breaking news to enterprise pieces, conceiving coverage plans, monitoring the region, and cultivating a deep source network. The position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
Must have:
  • 10+ years experience at a journalism or media company
  • 5+ years of reporting experience for a national and global audience
  • Mastery of journalistic style and standards
  • A portfolio including politics, news, enterprise and analysis
Good to have:
  • Deep understanding of regional issues, from experience living or working in Phoenix or the Southwest
  • Experience with nontraditional story formats

This New York Times National Desk is looking for a versatile, experienced correspondent based in Phoenix tasked with covering the Southwest and collaborating closely with the broader West coverage team. Ideally, you will have relevant expertise and experience covering a regional beat and have mastered the ability to identify which stories rise for a national and global audience. The Phoenix reporter will generate and pursue story ideas in the region or field, as well as contribute to our biggest stories that draw on reporters from across the team to cover.

Our correspondents are superb listeners who get to the bottom of a story. A record of collaborating well is a must. We are also looking for journalists with a deep bench of news sources and contacts and an ability to keep a pulse on current themes across the country. The National desk reports for all of our platforms and in a variety of formats, so possessing an enthusiasm for innovation is key to success.

This role may require extensive travel within the United States. This is a NY Guild role based in Phoenix.

Responsibilities:

  • You will produce a portfolio of work that ranges from breaking news stories to enterprise, accountability pieces and scoops, and embraces a variety of story formats and collaborations — that as a body of work help readers understand your region
  • You will be the authority on your region, helping to conceive coverage plans, respond swiftly to breaking news, and drive a sense of what is coming next, both by watching themes in the region and keeping tabs on upcoming events.
  • You will monitor your region on a constant basis, by scanning competition and guiding editors on the relevance of stories coming from the region.
  • You will cultivate a deep source network. 
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to a National editor

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years’ experience at a journalism or media company  
  • 5+ years of experience of reporting from a region for a national and global audience 
  • Writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment
  • A portfolio that includes politics, news, enterprise and analysis

Preferred Qualifications

  • A deep understanding of the issues facing the region, from experience living or working in Phoenix or the Southwest
  • Experience with nontraditional story formats
