Job Description

As a Previs Artist at Framestore, you'll design pre-visualized shots and sequences, collaborating with the Visualisation Supervisor to define shot composition, staging, lighting, camera language, and lens choices. You'll function as an in-house cinematographer and 3D storyboarder, visualizing the director's initial edit to inform the shoot and post-production VFX lifecycle. The role also includes producing technical information in diagram or animated schematic form ('techvis') based on the previs. You'll need to understand shooting methodology, apply it to previs, solve on-set needs, and translate CG elements to real-life situations. A hybrid working model is in place, requiring two days a week in the London studio, with potential for on-set work depending on project needs.

Job description

Framestore’s Preproduction Services division enables filmmakers and showrunners to make early-stage, creative decisions that can then guide their entire production. We have over a hundred creatives, technologists and producers working across concept art, previsualisation, virtual production, in-camera VFX, techvis and postvis.

As a Previs Artist, you will design pre-visualised shots and sequences on a project basis, working with the creative direction of the Visualisation Supervisor to define the shot composition, staging, lighting and camera language - including movement- lens choices, and framing. Our Previs Artists' skill sets are varied but are seen as the in-house cinematographers and 3D storyboarders visualising the Directors initial edit that will inform the shoot and post-production VFX lifecycle. 

You will also need to produce technical information in diagram form or animated schematics, otherwise known as, 'techvis' - based on the previs.

Framestore offers a hybrid working model, requiring two days per week at our central London studio. Depending on project needs, this role may also involve on-set work for up to five days per week.

Job requirements

  • Strong sense of cinematic composition and lighting.

  • Character animation (timing and performance).

  • Camera animation.

  • Knowledge of cinematic language and technical terminology.

  • Able to work with motion and/or performance capture data.

  • Able to take and interpret creative direction.

  • Adaptable and accepting of creative change throughout a project.

  • Understand shooting methodology and can apply it.

  • Understand the fundamentals of techvis and Virtual Production.

  • Able to apply shooting methodology information to Previs to create technical production solutions.

  • Able to solve and design solutions to on-set needs.

  • Can translate CG cameras and animation to apply to real-life situations.

Additional skills:

  • Motion Builder.

  • Blender.

  • Nuke.

  • Houdini.
