Principal Engineer, Games Experience Engineering

The Games Experience Engineering Organization is creating a new role to better support our Games business in releasing mobile and cloud games to thrill our members. Games Experience Engineering  is responsible for building out the games platform which is composed of the member experience, the developer experience, and all of the game play services that bring them together.  

As a Principal Engineer, you will be on the senior most individual contributor level at Netflix working across the initiatives outlined above. In this role you will identify and solve highly complex problems that impact the entire company, understand systems and practices  and formulate technical roadmaps for teams,  and provide executive-level technical leadership and mentorship to peers, stakeholders, and partners. 

Responsibilities 

  • Lead the development of large-scale game platform features to provide best-in-class experiences for our members, developers, and internal platform teams.

  • Work closely with product managers, UX designers, technical program managers and partner teams to decompose complex problems into simple, reusable solutions.

  • Dive deep to completely understand problems on a variety of platforms while collaborating with cross functional teams to provide both strategic and tactical oversight.

  • Drive end-to-end architectural designs that balance memberbenefit, cost, and resilience. 

  • Partner with other Directors of Technology to solve our hardest technical challenges and have material impact on the business. 

  • Assist in the career development of others, actively mentoring individuals and the community on advanced technical issues while helping managers guide the career growth of their team members.

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field 

  • 13+ years of professional software development experience 

  • 8+ years of experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems

  • Proven track record in developing, designing, and supporting systems used by games, for example live services and social platforms.

  • Deeply technical with proven success in setting the technical direction for engineering projects, making architectural decisions, and influencing cross-functional teams

  • Expert knowledge of client and server side development.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to executives and non-technical leaders

  • Able to work with senior leadership to develop a long-term technical strategy and map business goals to appropriate technology investments.

Our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $240,000 - $1,200,000.

Netflix provides comprehensive benefits including Health Plans, Mental Health support, a 401(k) Retirement Plan with employer match, Stock Option Program, Disability Programs, Health Savings and Flexible Spending Accounts, Family-forming benefits, and Life and Serious Injury Benefits. We also offer paid leave of absence programs.  Full-time hourly employees accrue 35 days annually for paid time off to be used for vacation, holidays, and sick paid time off.
