Principal Technologist – Linux Kernel Architecture
Location: US Remote

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Wind River Systems is seeking a seasoned senior experienced Linux kernel architect for a position as the Open-Sourced Operating System Linux’s Principal Technologist. As a member of the Linux team, the chosen candidate will join a team of dynamic, dedicated and highly experienced OS engineers responsible for the constant evolution of the Linux Platform product of Wind River. The chosen candidate will participate in high level architecture design of features; and development of Wind River Linux product. The Technologist will need to demonstrate superior understanding of the operating system, as well as having the interpersonal skills to work with diverse groups of product managers, architects, and external functional teams.
Utilizing your extensive experience around Linux and the open-source community, you will have the opportunity to architect Linux products with a focus on enabling customer features in the community and product.
ABOUT YOU
Who You will work with:
- Engineering Manager, and Engineering Program Managers and other architects and technologists to plan ongoing future development.
- Product Line Managers, Sales and customer support architects to determine software requirements.
- This position will report to the Director of Engineering
Key Responsibilities:
- Responsible for technical leadership of Linux Kernels
- Research, design new product features in the area of kernel based on software requirements.
- Based on the research results, writes high level design document and methodologies in cooperation with other architects
- Works closely with Engineering Managers to turn feature designs into product development projects
- Works with other architects to define technical roadmap for Linux Products,
- Works with engineering teams, partition the projects into tasks and delegates to senior and junior engineers.
- Investigate complex technical issues, present options and solutions.
- Not afraid of relying on your own years of technical experience, to be hands on in resolving complex technical issues.
- Works with Product Line Management, Sales, and customer architects to determine software requirements
- Works closely with customers and open-source community to enable customer requested features in the community and product
- Generates technical documentation and contributes to product requirements
- Generates outward facing white papers, blogs, presentations and talks
- Investigates new technologies and techniques and research ongoing industry developments
- Assists in product management decisions
- Mentors junior developers in resolving technical issues, sharing new technology, industry best practices, procedures, and concepts
Qualifications:
- Minimal 15+ years of operating system experience
- Significant experience in a senior technical / architect role, extensive experience in Linux software development in Kernel and BSP domain
- Significant experience working with and participating in Open-Source Communities and working effectively in an open-source development environment
- Experience working with Linux Kernel community and Open-Sourced Debian, Yocto community projects preferred
- Experience driving architectural software directions from a system viewpoint
- Familiar and/or work on STIG, FACE, FIPs, SDL/SSDF and other security standards would be a plus
- In-depth experience in developing the Linux Kernel in the areas of memory management, scheduler, performance, networking, and storage; with strong kernel and overall system debugging skills.
- Broad experience with all aspects of Linux OS
- Familiarity with Agile development and Dev Ops a significant asset
- Strong Enterprise software development experience
- Excellent interpersonal communication, teamwork, and leadership skills
- Comfortable and flexible on working in a distributed development environment with occasionally need for business travel
- Proven ability to work across many technology areas, act proactively and own a problem
- Experience working closely with customers to assess their requirements
- Able to enthusiastically work, interact with and educate diverse groups such as sales, marketing, business development, partners, support, etc.
