The Prototype Engineer will enable pre-silicon prototype development of silicon development chips, perform initial boot and validation testing at bare metal and OS kernel levels, and enable production Firmware/Software in pre-silicon environments. This role is crucial for defining and delivering operational success measures for hardware manufacturing, improving planning, quality, delivery, scale, and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. The ideal candidate will have experience developing bootloaders, firmware, test code, and possess strong debugging and problem-solving skills. The work involves optimizing cloud infrastructure and ensuring on-time, high-volume, high-quality deployment of new hardware.
Must have:
  • 5+ years experience OR Bachelor's degree + 2 years experience OR Master's degree + 1 year experience
  • Experience developing boot loaders, firmware, and hardware interfacing code
  • Good debugging and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of system-on-chip architecture
Good to have:
  • Affinity for working with early hardware
  • Experience with CPU architecture (Arm, x86)
  • Proficient in C and assembly language
  • Experience with JTAG debuggers
  • Experience bringing up new hardware
  • Experience with PCIe, USB, SPI, I2C, I3C, DDR SDRAM
  • Experience with Armv8-A, Armv9-A, Armv7-M architectures
  • Experience with Trusted Firmware-A, UEFI, U-Boot

Overview

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. Our focus is on smart growth, high efficiency, and delivering a trusted experience to customers and partners worldwide and we are looking for a Prototype Engineer to help achieve that mission. 

As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the prototyping team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for a Prototype Engineer with a dedicated passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of related technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience or internship experience
    • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ year(s) technical engineering experience or internship experience.
  • Experience developing boot loaders, firmware, test code, board support packages, device drivers, or other hardware interfacing code. 
  • Good debugging and problem-solving skills. 
  • Working knowledge of system on chip architecture. 

 

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.  

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Affinity for working with early/new hardware and software in prototype and silicon environments. Desire to bring up and enable new product capabilities. 
  • Ability to adapt to evolving project requirements. 
  • Working knowledge of a Central Processing Unit(CPU) architecture (Arm, x86, etc..). 
  • Proficient in C and assembly language.
  • Experience using Joint Test Action Group(JTAG) debuggers and their scripting languages to debug SW and HW issues (TRACE32, Arm-DS, OpenOCD, etc.). 
  • Experience bringing up new Hardware(HW). 
  • Experience with Peripheral Component Interconnect Express(PCIe), Universal Serial Bus(USB), Serial Peripheral Interface(SPI), I2C, I3C and/or Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DDR SDRAM) internals. 
  • Experience with Armv8-A, Armv9-A, Armv7-M architectures etc. 
  • Experience with Trusted Firmware-A, Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), U-Boot, etc. 
  • Experience configuring, optimizing, and bringing up operating systems on new SoCs, new boards, etc. (Linux, Windows). 
  • Experience with a version control system. 
  • Experience with C++, Python. 
  • Basic hardware debugging skills (oscilloscope and/or logic analyzer). 
  • Self-starter. 

 

Silicon Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.
