This Research Internship focuses on AI-mediated sensemaking, exploring how to leverage AI to enhance human thinking, understanding, and communication. The intern will collaborate on a project within the Human-Centered AI Experiences group, researching and developing methods to augment human cognitive capabilities while preserving agency and dignity. The internship involves conducting experiments using human-centered approaches, designing interactive systems utilizing AI technologies (like Large Language and Diffusion Models), and presenting findings. The role requires strong communication and collaboration skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and experience in HCI, ML, or AI research. The internship is based at the Microsoft Research Lab in Redmond, Washington.

Overview

As we deploy AI to become thinking companions, it is likely to see disruptions on how we think, make decisions, solve problems, etc. It is, thus, paramount to learn how to leverage AI to protect and augment how we think, we make sense of things, solve big problems and communicate what we learn.

 

To meet this challenge, the Human-Centered AI Experiences group is looking to hire a Research Intern to collaborate and work on a project related to how we can understand and leverage the latest developments in AI to augment the ways people think, understand and communicate information, while championing people's agency and dignity.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD or equivalent program in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer Science, Cognitive Sciences, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in conducting research and experiments using human-centered approaches in the fields of HCI, Machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI), or Design.

Other Requirements

  • Research Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.
  • In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position as well as a cover letter and any relevant work or research samples. After you submit your application, a request for letters may be sent to your list of references on your behalf. Note that reference letters cannot be requested until after you have submitted your application, and furthermore, that they might not be automatically requested for all candidates. You may wish to alert your letter writers in advance, so they will be ready to submit your letter. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in designing and developing interactive systems that leverage the latest AI technologies (e.g. Large Language and/or Diffusion Models).
  • Proficient communication and collaboration skills and be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • The ability to rapidly develop prototypes to explore their ideas is greatly encouraged.
  • Have publications in top-tier HCI, ML, and Design venues.
  • Data science experience, in understanding, analyzing, and communicating data is a plus.

The base pay range for this internship is USD $6,550 - $12,880 per month. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $8,480 - $13,920 per month.

Responsibilities

Research Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, Research Interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Research Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, Research Interns are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other Research Interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • The Research Internship will take place at the Microsoft Research Lab in Redmond.
  • The Research Intern will receive mentorship, training, and career development from the HCAIX group.
  • The Research Intern will also have access to workshops, webinars, and events that will enhance their knowledge and experience.
