Job Description

Alation is seeking a Sales Engineer to join their team. The role involves partnering with clients to understand their data needs and challenges, delivering compelling product demonstrations, and providing technical and project management expertise. The Sales Engineer will act as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor, designing high-impact solutions to unlock measurable business value. The company emphasizes a collaborative, fast-paced, and innovative environment, aiming to foster data-driven cultures and AI readiness among its customers. The role requires a consultative approach to selling and a commitment to continuous improvement of customer experiences.
Must have:
  • 5+ years in pre-sales or solutions role in data/SaaS
  • 10+ years in client-facing roles
  • Intellectual curiosity and problem-solving skills
  • High EQ and empathy for customer challenges
  • Strong technical background in data analytics
  • Energy and a 'hacker mindset'
Good to have:
  • Experience with metadata management
  • Experience with data governance
  • Experience with data catalog platforms
  • Familiarity with Snowflake, dbt, Tableau, Looker, Databricks

Job Description:

We are in a new, insights-driven world, and our customers look to us to help them foster data-driven cultures and ensure AI readiness. Our Sales Engineers play a strategic role in this process, drawing insights from our clients and helping shape the direction of the company. Innovative brands in ANZ like Domain Group, OFX, and HBF have all made Alation core to their data efforts. We expect our Sales Engineers to roll up their sleeves and partner with clients to tackle challenges that, when solved, can yield quantifiable business value. What You’ll Be Doing

  • Meet with prospective customers, gather use cases and product requirements, and deliver compelling product demos that align with customer business challenges and drive buying decisions.

  • Work closely with the sales team to provide technical and project management expertise, leading end-to-end customer engagements. Act as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor for our prospects and customers.

  • Partner with customers to design high-impact solutions that unlock measurable business value.

  • Rely on quantitative data and qualitative customer feedback to paint a picture of customer experience.

  • Constantly think about how you can improve the experience of both your customers and your team.

You Should Have

  • 5+ years in a pre-sales or solutions role in data or SaaS companies; 10+ years total experience in client-facing roles such as sales engineering, customer success, management consulting, or account management.

  • Intellectual curiosity – Demonstrated outstanding problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and a drive for growth.

  • High EQ – The ability to empathise with customer challenges and link Alation’s value directly to their goals.

  • Strong technical background, including (but not limited to): understanding of the data analytics ecosystem, cloud platforms, APIs, Python, BI and analytics tools. Backgrounds in data engineering or data science are a plus.

  • Energy and a “hacker mindset” – Appetite for working in a startup environment and a strong ability to get things done.

  • Passion for data and analytics – We believe in a world where informed decision-making is the norm, and we’d love it if you shared this vision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with metadata management, data governance, or data catalog platforms

  • Familiarity with tools such as Snowflake, dbt, Tableau, Looker, or Databricks

  • Experience supporting customers across APAC or working within regulated industries

Location & Work Environment

This role is based in Sydney and supports customers across the broader APAC region. We welcome hybrid work and require candidates to be legally authorised to work in Australia.
