The Second Engineer is responsible for engine room operations, overseeing the engineering watchkeeping team and ensuring the safe operation of all engineering systems. Responsibilities include preparing machinery for operation, overseeing system isolations and safety procedures, preventing environmental pollution, and providing professional guidance to subordinates. The role requires leadership, quick decision-making under pressure, and maintaining a cool head in dynamic situations. Maintenance and repair work supervision, upholding general safety management, and adherence to shipboard protocols are crucial. This is a shipboard role requiring a Second Engineer unlimited license or higher, 2+ years' experience as an Engineering Watch Leader (preferably on cruise vessels), excellent communication skills, and proven leadership abilities.

As Second Engineer you will be responsible for the engine room operation and in charge of the Engineering watch keeping team. When not on watch you will be responsible for maintenance of engineering systems.

Responsibilities:

  • While on watch in the Engine Control Room (ECR) oversees the proper/safe operation of all engineering systems and equipment.
  • Oversee the preparation of the main and auxiliary machinery for operation.
  • Require isolation of electrical and other systems and see that required safety permits and protective equipment are used before work on such systems is started.
  • Take precautions to prevent pollution of the environment.
  • Provides professional and social guidance to subordinates by exemplary personal leadership, and maintain good team work with other Engineering officers and Crew.
  • Leads and supervises all Crew Members under their charge to see that maintenance and repair work is done safely and professionally.
  • Uphold the general safety management responsibilities in areas and operations under their control.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Second Engineer unlimited license or higher
  • 2+ years’ experience as Engineering Watch Leader preferably on cruise vessels
  • Excellent communication skills, including fluent written and spoken English
  • Enthusiasm about guiding other team members
  • Proven leadership skills, and ability to take command and make quick decisions under pressure
  • Flexibility and a cool head in dynamic, ever-evolving environments


Additional Information:

This is a SHIPBOARD role.
You must:
  • Be genuinely interested in a career at sea and willing to live and work onboard a Disney Cruise Line vessel
  • Be willing to follow and perform safety role, emergency responsibilities, and associated responsibilities as specified in the ship Assembly Plan
  • Be willing to uphold the general safety management responsibilities as specified in the Safety Management System in areas and operations under their control
  • If applicable, be willing to share a confined cabin with other crew members and appreciative of working and living in a multicultural environment that has strict rules and regulations
Your Responsibilities:
  • Have a valid passport and C1/D Seaman's visa (DCL will provide you with documents to obtain this)
  • Complete a pre-employment medical
  • Obtain a criminal background check
  • Bring approved work shoes
