The Senior Corporate Counsel will provide legal support for Sony Interactive Entertainment's core business functions across the APAC region. This role involves advising on a broad range of legal matters, including channel sales, digital distribution, consumer law, and regulatory issues related to the PlayStation console and digital segments. The counsel will work with various legal teams, provide transactional support, draft and negotiate agreements, manage regulatory inquiries, and supervise the APAC legal team. They will also be a strategic partner to business teams, managing risk, and driving growth in the APAC region, handling day-to-day operations, sales, distribution, marketing, and vendor engagement. This role requires a strong understanding of APAC's legal and regulatory landscape, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects across different geographies.
Must have:
  • Law degree and license to practice law in a common law jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of 12 years of legal experience in-house or law firm.
  • Experience leading and managing a team.
  • Familiarity with consumer, e-commerce, contract, and advertising laws in APAC.
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills in English.

  • Ability to speak multiple languages relevant to the APAC region.

Role Overview:

Sony Interactive Entertainment Singapore (“SIE”) has a unique opportunity to provide legal support for a number of SIE’s core business functions across APAC. This Senior Corporate Counsel position will have specific responsibility for a broad range of legal matters across multiple markets in the APAC region and will have leadership responsibilities within the APAC team. In this role, you will have a broad scope of responsibility supporting channel sales, digital distribution and business operations, handling consumer law issues and providing regulatory advice for the PlayStation console business and digital segments such as PlayStation Store, PlayStation Network and PlayStation Plus. You will work closely with subject domains within the legal department such as public policy, intellectual property, data privacy and corporate governance. You will also serve as a functional legal expert who possesses subject matter expertise in two or more legal and regulatory areas relevant to the PlayStation business in APAC.

What you'll be doing:

Provide transactional support and general legal counseling to a broad range of SIE business functions in APAC, including:

  • Being a strategic thought partner to business, operational and functional support teams;
  • Advising and supporting, or partnering with other legal team members to advise and support business teams to manage risk and drive growth in the APAC region;
  • Providing general legal advice on corporate and commercial activities across multiple countries, including day-to-day business operations, sales, distribution, marketing, advertising, consumer matters, vendor engagement and regulatory matters, among others;
  • Reviewing, drafting and negotiating business agreements and legal documents in support of all lines of business, including procurement, new business initiatives and program rollouts;
  • Managing and responding to inquiries or investigations by regulators or law enforcement agencies, working closely with internal teams and outside counsel where required;
  • Working closely with SIE’s Legal Director for APAC on direction and strategy as part of the legal department’s regional support for APAC;
  • Providing legal advice across a variety of topics to global legal teams seeking regional legal inputs for global product launches, marketing materials, blogs, packaging, and other initiatives launched on PlayStation Store and PlayStation Network and PlayStation Plus;
  • Advising on policy or regulatory matters;
  • Supervising, managing and leading members of the APAC legal team;
  • Managing outside counsel and a legal budget; and
  • Leading or supporting global and regional projects from time to time.

What we're looking for:

  • Law graduate with a license to practice law in Singapore, England or another common law jurisdiction;
  • Minimum 12 years’ experience practicing law either in an in-house corporate legal department, top-tier law firm or a combination of both;
  • Experience leading and managing a team;
  • Familiarity with consumer, e-commerce, contract, product marketing and advertising laws in one or more APAC countries;
  • Experience providing legal support for to sales and marketing organisations in APAC, ideally in the consumer electronics sales (physical and e-sales) and hardware distribution sector;
  • A keen eye for detail – precision, accuracy, and very good attention to detail are essential;
  • A motivated, reliable, disciplined, self-starter who thinks and works proactively and cross-functionally and is effective at working and solving problems collaboratively with other stakeholders;
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills in at least English;
  • Excellent communicator possessing excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to manage and support projects across multiple geographies and subject matters;
  • Ability to think and negotiate, creatively and effectively balancing legal constraints with business goals and objectives; and
  • Excellent decision-making skills and ability to identify and prioritize the highest impact initiatives and driving them to pragmatic resolution.
