Job Description

SkyBox Labs seeks a Senior Environment Artist to contribute to Destiny 2's immersive worlds. Collaborating with various teams, you'll own environment creation from concept to completion. Responsibilities include building layouts using organic and hard-surface elements, in-engine refinement of level layouts, composition, and environmental storytelling. Optimization within a proprietary pipeline to meet performance goals is crucial. Collaboration with level designers to ensure world layouts enhance player experience is key. The ideal candidate possesses extensive world-building experience in a game engine, strong level art and design sensibilities, and expert proficiency in 3ds Max or Maya.

The studio is currently co-developing Halo Infinite, working on projects in the Minecraft universe, supporting the dev team at Bungie on Destiny, supporting development of Fallout 76, and working on original IP. SkyBox Labs is looking for a Senior Environment Artist to join our team and contribute to the immersive worlds of Destiny 2. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with multiple teams of skilled and talented individuals to shape compelling game spaces. Your focus will be on engine-driven world-building, owning your space from ideation to the finished level, placing pre-made assets, and utilizing your creative power to bring vibrant environments to life.

A Snapshot of Your Role:

    • Work closely with designers, artists, and other disciplines to craft immersive spaces that align with gameplay and narrative needs
    • Build world layouts using a mix of organic and hard surface elements 
    • Own your space from ideation all the way to fully realized, living environment
    • Work directly in-engine to refine level layouts, composition, and environmental storytelling
    • Optimize and problem-solve within a proprietary pipeline, ensuring performance goals are met without sacrificing quality
    • Collaborate with level designers to ensure world layouts enhance the player experience

Sound Like You? Here’s What We’re Looking For:

    • Extensive world-building experience in a game engine
    • Strong level art and design sensibilities, with a track record of working alongside designers to build gameplay-ready spaces
    • Expert proficiency in 3ds Max or Maya
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively across teams
    • Organized and adaptable, with strong time management skills
    • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to learn new tools and workflows
    • A portfolio showcasing environmental storytelling, creativity, and technical skill

    • Nice-to-Haves:
    • Understanding of lighting, FX, or other disciplines 
    • Asset modeling experience
