Job Description

As a Senior Frontend Engineer, you will be a key member of the Presentations Editing Team, responsible for building and maintaining the presentation editing features within Canva. You will work closely with designers and product managers to implement new features and improve the user experience. You will also be responsible for ensuring the performance and scalability of the presentations editing platform. The team is heavily focused on integrating AI/ML, interactivity, and other power user features into the Presentations product, creating an exciting and impactful environment for developers.
Must have:
  • Excellent computer science fundamentals
  • Deep understanding of key browser concepts
  • Experience developing rich applications with HTML/CSS/JS
  • Experience and knowledge of cross-browser and cross-device development
  • Understanding of the browser event model
  • Ability to write performant, reusable code for UI components
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong technical leadership

  • Passion for great UX, storytelling, and collaboration
  • Cross-browser knowledge

About the Team
The Presentations Editing Team is responsible for owning the critical user journeys around creating and editing presentations designs. Sitting within the Editing Group, they are key members of the broader Visual Suite. Presentations as a doctype is the most used at Canva. The team also collaborates heavily with counterparts in Editing, Video, and Collaboration.

While we have shipped world class products, there is still much to be done. We have a packed upcoming road map of features that will take both Presentations to new heights. Expect a strong focus on both AI/ML integration, interactivity, and other power user features.

Qualifications

What we are looking for

  • Excellent computer science fundamentals.
  • Someone who has (or wants to build) a deep understanding of key browser concepts like the event loop, bubbling/capturing and rendering pipeline.
  • Excited by solving hard problems, video editing in the browser is hard and requires going deep on technical problems to find solutions.
  • Someone to jump into product development to continually ship value to users.
  • Excellent communication to build relationships with a diverse group of people to be able to drive impact across the company.
  • Strong technical leadership to help take projects and problems from chaos to clarity.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of JavaScript and web technologies (HTML/CSS)
  • Experience developing rich applications with HTML/CSS/JS
  • Experience and knowledge of cross-browser and cross-device development
  • Deep understanding of key browser concepts like the event loop, bubbling/capturing and rendering pipeline.
  • Understanding of the browser event model (bubbling, capturing)
  • Ability to write performant, reusable code for UI components, including appropriate testing

Ideal Candidate

 

  • Passion for great UX, storytelling and collaboration.
  • Cross-browser knowledge as we are often driving changes that may have implications across many different browsers, devices, and modalities.
  • Problem-solving and algorithm skills.
  • Having worked as part of a design system.
  • Having worked to build and ship impactful product and/or changes.
  • Consideration for performance, especially as it relates to a great product experience.
  • Our frontend stack consists of JavaScript, HTML, CSS, React, TypeScript, MobX, etc.. Experience in some of these would be valuable but is not required.
  • Firmly grounding in computer science and engineering fundamentals including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns.
