The Senior HPC DevOps Engineer is responsible for DevOps activities for software products and supporting systems. This role involves using advanced technical and problem-solving skills to address complex issues, meet customer needs, and achieve development goals. The engineer will also manage operations in High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments, including customizing, configuring, and debugging HPC schedulers like SLURM, LSF, and PBA. Expertise in traditional DevOps and HPC-specific workflows is required to ensure efficient system performance for high-demand workloads. This includes deploying, configuring, and maintaining HPC systems; customizing and troubleshooting job schedulers; and collaborating to resolve technological infrastructure problems. The role also involves debugging and testing code, packaging software, and maintaining tools and infrastructure.
Must have:
  • 5 years experience (BS) or 3 years (MS) in related field
  • 3+ years of hand-on experience in HPC deployment
Good to have:
  • Knowledge of software development tools
  • Knowledge of Windows and/or Linux operating systems
  • Proficiency in coding languages like Python, Go
  • Experience with cloud and DevOps technologies
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

Summary / Role Purpose

The Senior HPC DevOps Engineer is responsible for the DevOps activities of one or more software products and supporting systems. In this role, the Senior DevOps Engineer will use advanced technical and problem-solving skills to help the team tackle complex issues, satisfy customer requirements, and accomplish development objectives. Additionally, the Senior HPC DevOps Engineer will be responsible for managing operations in High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments, including the customization, configuration, and debugging of HPC schedulers such as SLURM, LSF, and PBA. This position requires expertise in both traditional DevOps practices and HPC-specific operational workflows, ensuring robust and efficient system performance tailored to high-demand computational workloads.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deploy, configure, and maintain High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Customize, configure, and troubleshoot job schedulers such as SLURM, PBA, LSF, and others to meet specific operational requirements.
  • Collaborates with others to brainstorm best techniques to resolve complex technological infrastructure, build or packaging problems
  • Performs moderately complex debug and testing actions on code, processes, and deployments to identify ways to streamline execution and minimize errors encountered 
  • Responsibilities may involve build and packaging open-source third-party software packages
  • Maintenance of tools, infrastructure and build environment for product creation staff 
  • Employs best practices and helps to maintain them through technical reviews

 

Minimum Education/Certification Requirements and Experience

  • BS in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field with 5 years’ experience, MS with 3 years’ experience
  • At least 3 years of full hand-on experience in HPC deployment and configuration

 

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of software development tools, compilers, and packaging software 
  • Extensive knowledge of Windows and/or Linux operating systems and on cloud and DevOps technologies like Kubernetes, Terraform, Ansible
  • Proficiency in multiple coding languages such as Python, Go, etc.
  • Passion for crafting robust and efficient automated build systems 
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to learn quickly and to collaborate with others in a geographically distributed team
