Job Description
The Senior Level Data Scientist will be responsible for designing, developing, and supporting data science solutions for the Department of Defense's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO). This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate AI solutions, optimizing AI models, and staying current with AI research advancements. The Data Scientist will also manage the lifecycle of AI/ML components, apply analytical methodologies, document findings, and contribute to rapid prototyping strategies. The position requires a deep understanding of machine learning algorithms, experience with NLP, and proficiency in data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation techniques. The role directly impacts national security by leveraging advanced NLP, semantic search, and RAG technologies.
Must have:
- Experience with ML fields (NLP, computer vision, statistical learning theory).
- Hands-on experience with NLP, Large Language Models, text embedding, semantic query.
- Proficiency in data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation.
- Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms (supervised, unsupervised).
- Experience with version control systems (Git).
- Experience building ML models in a data scientist or ML engineer role.
- Proficiency in Python and experience with at least one of: R, Scala, Java, or C++.
- Experience using Apache Spark/Databricks for AI/ML workloads.
- Experience handling petabyte-scale datasets, data visualization, SQL, and GPU-based model development.
- Active Top Secret (TS) security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) eligibility.

About the Role
Redhorse is seeking a highly skilled Senior Level Data Scientist to join our team supporting the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) within the Department of Defense (DoD). You will play a crucial role in driving data-driven decision-making and developing cutting-edge AI/ML solutions for mission-critical applications like GAMECHANGER, Contract Search, and JBook Search on the Advana platform. This position offers the unique opportunity to directly impact national security by leveraging advanced NLP, semantic search, and RAG technologies at scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, configure, develop, test, and support informatics and data science solutions for a wide array of technical use cases.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists and software engineers, to integrate AI solutions into Search Portfolio products.
- Optimize AI models for performance, scalability, and efficiency, leveraging Apache Spark/Databricks and GPU-enabled Kubernetes clusters.
- Remain current on AI research advancements and apply new findings to improve Search Portfolio products.
- Manage the lifecycle of AI/ML components, from research and development to deployment and optimization.
- Apply analytical methodologies to diagnose data challenges, implement solutions, and evaluate performance.
- Document and present requirements, design alternatives, and findings to team members and clients.
- Develop strategic, baselined data modeling processes and determine cause-and-effect relationships.
- Maintain and guide the development of common libraries and tools used by multiple teams.
- Contribute to formulating a strategy for rapid prototyping.
Required Experience/Clearance
- Bachelor's degree plus 7-10 years of experience, or a Master's degree plus 5 years of experience.
- Experience with ML fields (NLP, computer vision, statistical learning theory).
- Hands-on experience with NLP, Large Language Models, text embedding, semantic query, generative AI for text, and RAG.
- Proficiency in data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation techniques.
- Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms (supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement learning, neural networks).
- Experience with version control systems (Git).
- Experience building ML models in a data scientist or ML engineer role.
- Proficiency in Python and experience with at least one of: R, Scala, Java, or C++.
- Experience using Apache Spark/Databricks for AI/ML workloads.
- Experience handling petabyte-scale datasets, data visualization, SQL, and GPU-based model development.
- Experience with cloud-based data persistence products, particularly RDS PostgreSQL and pgvector extensions.
- Experience persisting vectorized data from text embedding processes using Elastic and/or OpenSearch, in addition to vector enabled RDBMS like pgvector enhanced PostgreSQL
- Proven ability to communicate technical concepts to diverse audiences and deliver data-driven presentations.
- Active Top Secret (TS) security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) eligibility.
