This role supports multiple responsibilities across all International operations, requiring a highly organized self-starter capable of managing a global team across various time zones and over 30 International bureaus with a staff of 150+. The position is hybrid, based in New York City, and involves close collaboration with the Deputy Director of Newsroom Operations. Responsibilities include standardizing onboarding, workflow, communications, and operations, providing support and guidance to staff and bureau managers, managing international bureau and car leases, assisting with annual budgets and financial reports, managing international transactions, and overseeing departmental expenses and freelance payments. The role also involves building systems for the international desk and organizing home leave schedules for international staffers.

The International Desk of The New York Times is looking for a Senior Operations Manager to support its expanding global International team, covering multiple responsibilities across all International operations. It's a dynamic and important time to join the desk as we expand our footprint globally and navigate new challenges in an ever-changing world. We are looking for a highly organized self-starter capable of handling the demands of a global team in multiple time zones, with over 30 International bureaus, and a 150 + person staff. The role is a critical center point on the desk that will be connective tissue to our international operation and be integrated in our newsroom operations in New York.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.You will report to the Deputy Director of Newsroom Operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Work in partnership with the Deputy Director and Director, International Strategy and Operations, on projects including standardizing onboarding, workflow, communications, and operations responsibilities.

  • Facilitate regular check-ins with staff to provide support.

  • Mentor and provide operational guidance and prioritization to the desk operations manager.

  • Be a liaison and a resource for the desk and bureau managers across the globe.

  • Work in partnership with hub operations managers in London and Seoul.

  • Collaborate with the Global Mobility and HR teams to surface and solve any relocation issues for International staffers.

  • Manage the International bureau and car leases while working with News Finance, Facilities, and Legal, to maintain international leases, including our bureau leases in a systematic and transparent way.

  • Help create the annual budgets and providing oversight of the budgets, and monthly closes, supplying additional financial reports; partner with the Director of International Strategy & Operations and the department head on understanding trends.

  • Manage international transactions for funding bureaus and employees in the field, including wire transfers.

  • Manage all departmental expenses outside vendors' payments.

  • Manage all freelance payments, contracts, and invoices.

  • Perform general administrative tasks to assist editors and the operations manager as assigned, including general day-to-day operations.

  • Build systems and standardize operations for the international desk across hubs and bureaus.

  • Organize home leave schedules for International staffers rotating into New York.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in an operational or administrative role

  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality on all matters

  • You have empathy for the challenges that teammates face each day, and a desire to help others do their best work

  • You welcome challenges and look for creative solutions

  • Leadership qualities. You are level-headed, and can handle difficult conversations while also mentoring and guiding your direct reports to position them for success.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent combination of training and experience

  • You can work with all levels of management and staff and manage the needs of a team of 100+ employees and leaders

  • Be accessible after hours or on weekends when breaking news demands

  • Experience with a heavy volume of requests from all team members and answering inquiries, resolving problems, and making appropriate referrals

  • Experience with Workday, and Coupa.
