Senior Regional Compliance Counsel, APAC

About the Team: Our Global Legal Compliance team provides key support for all of ByteDance's and TikTok’s innovative initiatives, state-of-the-art products, and integrated platforms servicing our global markets. We help our technological and business teams enable their vision by providing integrated legal and compliance guidance and support. The ByteDance and TikTok team are growing fast and is seeking a highly experienced, bright, and capable legal/compliance lawyer to join us. We are looking for a senior Regional Compliance Counsel to be based in Singapore to join our Global Legal Compliance team as the main regional point of contact in the APAC region for APAC compliance programs, advice and counsel. We are seeking an experienced compliance attorney with direct experience in anti-bribery and anti-corruption and financial crime areas, including anti-money-laundering and sanctions, who also possess strong client engagement skills. The ideal candidate is willing to work in a fast-paced, global environment with cross-functional teams in different time zones, and enjoys the challenges and opportunities of novel issues across a variety of jurisdictions with an open-minded mentality to tackle issues which we may not see before. Responsibilities - This position is responsible for the ongoing enhancement and maintenance of global corporate compliance programs, including without limitation, US and EU sanctions programs, anti-bribery and anti-corruption, AML, and trade compliance (e.g., export, import, customs) programs in the APAC markets; - Be the main regional compliance counsel based in the APAC region (which may grow over time) and advise/counsel regional stakeholders on the legal compliance issues covered by the Global Legal Compliance team, and coordinate with other legal, compliance and policy colleagues based in other regions and the US, working closely with our internal audit, internal investigation, product, and sales functions; - Conduct periodic legal compliance risk assessments in the region to assess effectiveness of compliance systems, identify gaps and develop remediation plans; - Maintain competency in evolving regional trends and risks, and regulatory regimes that could impact the business; - Develop compliance processes and SOPs in line with regional trends and risks; - Advise internal investigation relevant to compliance policies owned by the Global Legal Compliance team, and partner with internal investigation team to support internal investigations if needed; - Conduct internal compliance training and education programs from time to time in partnership with the other regional compliance counsel and the Ethics Office.

Minimum Qualifications - Law degree or Masters of Law, up-to-date qualifications to practice law in common law jurisdiction is required - Proven combined compliance experience in a reputable international law firm and in-house with a multi-national company. Candidates should also have sufficient knowledge of regulatory and compliance programs in APAC. - Demonstrates expert-level analytical skills and exceptional judgment in addressing complex and nuanced issues and able to articulate how legal decisions relevant to the company and the industry are impacted by the regulatory environment and trends, and makes appropriate recommendations to the business. - Strong oral and written communication skills; understands client needs, requirements, and key concerns; adapts communication style and approach to maximize impact across a range of audiences. - Possess the highest standard of ethics and a positive attitude in learning and willing to pick up new knowledge and skills. - Candidate must be able to demonstrate leadership skills in setting strategic goals, but also have a "roll up their sleeves" mentality in executing the work. - Maintains an appropriate degree of confidentiality. Preferred Qualifications - Experience with technology and/or fintech sectors is preferred, and experience in the US and UK/EU markets is a strong plus. - Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating flexibility, commitment to teamwork, and a willingness to change assignments to meet clients' needs. Anticipates clients needs and delivers with timeliness, accurately sensing the urgency and sensitivity to the situation. - Ability to manage heavy workload volume and meet critical deadlines with little supervision. - Proactively makes recommendations for necessary process improvements. - Demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the clients' business, industry and organization and shows support for delivery of the product, services and initiatives of the organization. - Proactively identifies problems or issues and takes lead in resolving issues.
