Job Description

As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll own the development and maintenance of core frameworks, execution environments, and build systems used across multiple Disney products (using Java, Python, or JavaScript). You'll contribute to test automation frameworks, implement solutions for complex technical problems, and drive deployments. Responsibilities include breaking down large stories into smaller tasks, developing and supporting test automation, designing solutions, maintaining documentation, mentoring developers, and investigating/resolving framework issues. You'll be a core member of the Quality Engineering team, increasing productivity through innovation and championing Disney Quality.
Must have:
  • 5+ years SDE experience with automated testing
  • Proficient in OOP and Java/Python/JavaScript
  • Experience with test automation frameworks
  • Excellent problem-solving & collaboration skills
  • Experience leading technical solutions
Good to have:
  • Spring Boot application experience

About the Organization

Engineering Services designs, builds, and sustains technology that powers DE&E Technology’s worldwide content production and distribution platforms. We contribute to a series of cross-functional services and technologies, including Quality Engineering, Observability, Developer Platforms, Broadcast Infrastructure and Software, and Networking. The Quality Engineering team validates all Disney-built software before production, including web, mobile, living room applications, media, services, non-consumer-facing products and more.

Job Summary:

As a member of our team, you will strive to accomplish the following goals:

  • Own the development and maintenance of two or more functional areas of core frameworks, execution environments, build systems and tooling used across multiple products, using a structured programming language like Java, Python, or JavaScript.
  • Contribute to the design & implementation of test automation frameworks with input from senior engineers by checking-in valuable, clean code daily that adds new features and capabilities
  • Become a member of our Quality Engineering team, driving increasing quality through innovation, automated test creation, curiosity and thoughtful debate.
  • Contribute to the successful implementation of solutions for complex technical problems with DE&ET engineering teams, and driving the deployment of Disney backend and guest-facing products at Disney Quality.
  • Providing strategic input on future initiatives with stakeholders and other engineers
  • Contributing to and collecting data to inform Key Performance Indicators used for defining project statuses and effectiveness 

Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:

  • Independently break large stories until into smaller tasks based on stakeholder requirements
  • Developing and supporting test automation frameworks, execution environments, build systems, and reporting tools
  • Designs solutions to and develop architecture for a new project feature, with occasional guidance from more senior engineers
  • Maintaining documentation meant for end user consumption as well as project contributor documentation
  • Support and mentor developers and manual testers through code reviews, knowledge-sharing, and technical leadership
  • Investigating and resolving any framework, tool or execution of environmental issues affecting our services
  • Becoming a core member of our Quality Engineering team, helping others increase productivity through innovation, and championing the core value of Disney Quality

Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:

  • Bachelor’s degree or the foreign equivalent in Computer Science or a closely related field
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in a software development (SDE) occupation, including automated testing of front end and backend services using a structured programming language.
  • Proficient in object-oriented design and expertise with one of the following programming languages: Node/JavaScript, Java, Python
  • Experience with test automation and unit testing frameworks
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent collaboration skills and ability to use standard software development lifecycle (SDLC) tools such as Jira and Confluence, and version control systems.
  • Experience leading one to two teams in technical solutioning
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Highly motivated, self-starting individual

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience shipping a production Spring Boot application
  • Experience in mobile and web application development and testing
  • Experience with developing applications in cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) utilizing infrastructure as code (Cloudformation and/or Terraform)
  • Experience working with Agile methodologies
  • Working knowledge of web accessibility fundamentals
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Spinnaker, and continuous integration/delivery systems
  • Experience writing Gherkin Syntax to facilitate the development of automated test scenarios
  • Experience developing advanced mocking mechanisms (e.g., rule-based proxies and dummy-services)
  • Experience with test suite/case/run management tools (e.g., JIRA Xray, etc.)

The hiring range for this position in New York, NY is $145,400 to $195,000 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
