As a Senior Gameplay Engineer at Hypixel Studios, you'll design and build core gameplay systems, working closely with technical designers using in-house tools. You'll be a key user of the game engine, contributing to its improvement while prototyping and developing gameplay from concept to implementation. Collaboration with design and engineering teams is crucial. Responsibilities include organizing workflows, providing project updates, collaborating with producers, supporting creative teams, and ensuring effective communication across disciplines and time zones. The role demands creative problem-solving and navigating Agile frameworks in a dynamic environment.
Must have:
  • 6+ years professional programming experience
  • 3+ years in a game engine (C/C++)
  • 3+ years experience in C/C++
  • Proficient communication (technical & non-technical)
  • Experience with game engine scripting systems
Good to have:
  • Experience in block/voxel/survival games
  • Networked, multiplayer gameplay experience

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer  to join our team at Hypixel Studios, which collaborates remotely from around the world. Our members range from industry newcomers to experts with 25+ years of experience. Team members come from a diverse set of backgrounds, but share a common passion for building polished player-focused, community-powered games.

Hytale empowers creative expression across a spectrum of experiences including sandbox adventure, social play, minigames, and creativity using a suite of powerful and accessible tools.

 

As a Gameplay Engineer you will be responsible for designing and building the gameplay systems that drive our content creation. You will support and be supported by a team of technical designers who take design and turn it into gameplay using our scripting and game editing tools. You will be the first customer of our game engine, using that engine itself to build the game while driving improvements to it.

 

You will also have a hand in the design and initial versions of gameplay and systems, from concept to prototype whilst working in collaboration with the design and the rest of engineering

  • You have a history of creative problem solving, finding ways to unblock teams while building strong relationships within and across disciplines
  • You have experience in working with modern Agile frameworks and can adapt to ever-changing processes.
  • You strive to participate in creating empowered teams driven by effective work processes.
  • You’re an excellent communicator and are passionate about working across disciplines and timezones to deliver work aligned to the studio’s goals.

Some of your role:

  • Work with our creative teams to help organize their workflows, priorities and schedules.
  • Provide consistent project updates to stakeholders and keep the broader team informed of work status across disciplines
  • Collaborate with Product Owners and other Producers to understand the priorities, requests and timelines of the broader team.
  • Support creative team members as a force multiplier, keeping the team informed and focused while also taking the time to celebrate wins.

Essential Traits: 

  • 6+ years of professional programming experience
  • 3+ years working in a game engine (commercial or proprietary)
  • 3+ years experience in C/C++
  • Proficient at communicating with both technical and non-technical individuals
  • Experience with scripting systems in a game engine (e.g., Lua, etc).

 

Bonus Traits: 

  • Deeply and/or broadly played in the block-, voxel-, and/or survival-game genres 
  • Experience with networked, multiplayer gameplay
  • Experience with Data-Oriented Development
