The New York Times Book Review is seeking a senior staff editor to work with the desk for eight months. The role involves assigning and editing reviews of literary and popular fiction, audiobooks, and photo books, as well as editing features in various digital formats. The ideal candidate will be highly skilled in editing diverse story forms, including criticism and service journalism, with an understanding of how the Book Review reaches readers both on and off-platform. Precision, creativity, deadline-driven work, and the ability to work independently with editorial discretion are essential. Responsibilities include assigning and editing multiple stories weekly, acting as a second editor, collaborating with other teams and visual editors, writing engaging display copy, and adhering to editorial standards.

The New York Times Book Review is seeking a senior staff editor to work with the desk for eight months. In this role you will assign and edit reviews of literary and popular fiction, audiobooks and photo books, and you will edit features in various digital formats.

 

You will be highly skilled at editing a variety of story forms, including criticism, service journalism, profiles and more. You have an understanding of how The Book Review reaches readers on and off-platform. You are precise, creative and deadline driven. You should also be ready to work independently, exercising a significant degree of editorial discretion. 

 

This position is based in New York, and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

 

Responsibilities

  • Assign, shape and edit multiple stories per week.
  • Act as a second editor for all story types on the desk.
  • Collaborate with editors on other teams and visual editors.
  • Write engaging display copy, including headlines and captions for an online audience.
  • Adhere to The Times’s editorial standards.
  • You will demonstrate an understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • This role reports to the deputy editor of the Book Review.

 

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years as an editor with demonstrated experience producing first-in-class books coverage
  • Impeccable communication and organizational skills  
  • Skilled at working with reporters and critics on a variety of digital formats, from story development to publication
  • Passion for covering books and authors

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working across desks in a newsroom
