Microsoft's Azure Data Explorer (Kusto) team seeks a Service Engineer/SRE to contribute to their large-scale cloud service (200k+ nodes). Responsibilities include live site management (24/7 global team), ensuring high availability and performance; unwavering customer focus (internal and external); automation development to manage growing scale; contributing to product design and architecture; improving observability and efficiency; incident/problem management; and building a strong community. The role requires strong troubleshooting, scripting (preferably .NET, PowerShell, Python, or C#), and experience with cloud-based systems.
Must have:
  • 2+ years experience in relevant engineering field

Reinventing Big-Data Engine is happening NOW in Azure Data Explorer team (Kusto). 
The team started as a small incubation 10 years ago and has already made a big impact within Microsoft. 
Today, we are running a very large-scale cloud service (over 200k nodes), provide log analytics for hundreds of teams across all Microsoft divisions as well as external world customers.  
 
We are looking for strong and motivated Service Engineer/SRE to help us continue driving the Azure Data Explorer / Real Time Analytics revolution and make it THE technology for log search and text analytics across all Microsoft as well as providing value to our external customers.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 2+ years technical experience in software engineering, network engineering, service engineering, or systems engineering
    • OR equivalent experience
  • 1-2+ years of scripting and programming experience (preferably .NET, PowerShell, Python, C#) 
  • 1-2+ years of troubleshooting experience in wide cloud based systems
  • Ability to work as part of an on-call rotation is a must! 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 5+ years technical experience in software engineering, network engineering, service engineering, or systems engineering
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 1+ year(s) technical experience working with large-scale cloud or distributed systems. Management Information Systems (MIS), or other industry or product specific Engineering Certifications
  • Understanding of cloud services is a big plus (preferably Azure) 
  • Working knowledge of Database as well as Big Data systems is a plus 
  • Understanding of BCDR  
  • Understanding and working knowledge of CI\CD pipeline is a plus 
  • Out of the box, quick and agile thinking to adapt to fast pace and changing environment  
  • Knowledge of system design & architecture, and running of complex, large scale online services 
  • Ability to contribute to multiple projects/demands simultaneously 
  • Ability to work effectively with customers both internal and external to Microsoft is a must

 

Service Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.

Responsibilities

As an SRE in Kusto your primary responsibilities will be: 

  • Live Site Management – Almost all of Microsoft relies on Azure Data Explorer (Kusto) for keeping their business running. This fuels a lot of passion in our team to keep the systems working at high availability and performance. As an SRE, you will be part of a global team driving huge scale live sites 24X7 (with follow the Sun model) and are passionate about delivering the best service within Microsoft, as well as to external customers 
  • Customer Focus – Microsoft core value is Customer First. We in Kusto take pride in that and bring unwavering customer focus and support to help our customers utilize, embed and build deep solutions on top of Kusto tailored to their needs. 
  • Automation – As Kusto scale is huge and is expected to keep growing rapidly, we are committed to delivering automation and tooling to improve our live site management and adhere to scale without scale methodology.   
  • Design - Evaluate and contribute to product, service design and architecture, help shape Site Reliability Engineering strategies, review specifications, design and improve upon core processes  
  • Observability - Identify system problems and recommend monitoring solutions & automation to improve processing efficiency and stability.  
  • Provide engineering design across different workloads including incident & problem management, change management, security and compliance.  
  • Community Building - Help us build and contribute to a strong Azure Data explorer community
