Microsoft's Silicon Manufacturing Package Engineering (SMPE) team seeks highly motivated interns for a 12-week summer 2025 program in Gelugor, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. Interns will collaborate on projects involving cutting-edge silicon development, working with product testing, data analysis, scripting, web development, predictive modeling, and generating insights. Responsibilities include contributing to hardware solutions, using performance instrumentation, implementing technical solutions, writing design verification test cases, and assisting in pre-silicon verification. Successful completion may lead to a return offer. The program offers mentorship from industry leaders and exposure to innovative tools and workflows.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field
  • At least one semester/quarter remaining after internship
  • Contribute to hardware solutions
  • Implement technical solutions
  • Write design verification test cases
Good to have:
  • Master's degree in relevant field
  • Experience in digital logic design
  • Experience with C/C++ and scripting
  • Knowledge of verification principles, UVM

About the team and role:

 

We are the Silicon Manufacturing Package Engineering (SMPE) team, on a mission to "deliver Cobalt and Maia Custom Silicon for Azure Data Center and AI" to drive the growth of High-Performance Computing and Artificial Intelligence.

 

We are seeking highly motivated, passionate, and curious individuals eager to learn new technologies and tackle complex challenges. This role offers an exciting opportunity to gain valuable experience.

 

As a Silicon Engineer Intern, you will collaborate closely with our team on diverse projects, gaining hands-on experience in cutting-edge silicon development at Microsoft. You'll work with product testing, analyze large datasets, engage in scripting, or web development, build predictive

models, and generate actionable insights to support our business goals. This is an excellent chance to launch a career in silicon engineering, with mentorship from industry-leading experts and exposure to innovative tools and workflows.

About the Internship Program:

 

It's a 12-week onsite internship program in summer of 2025. Upon successful completion of the internship, interns may be considered for a return offer based on performance and company needs.

 

Target candidates:

 

Penultimate year university students (Graduation time: 7/2025~6/2026) from related major such as Electrical & Electronics Engineering major microelectronics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, etc.

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering major microelectronics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Must have at least one additional quarter/semester of school remaining following the completion of the internship.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering major microelectronics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Experience or classes in the following areas:
    • Digital Logic Design and Simulation
    • Object Oriented Programming and Data Structures
    • Embedded Systems and Firmware
    • Knowledge of verification principles, testbenches, UVM
    • Knowledge of C/C++ and scripting languages
    • Experience with digital timing analysis, synthesis, place-n-route
    • Circuit design, including VLSI design and solid-state devices  

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and improve the hardware solutions we develop.
  • Uses performance instrumentation and presents results to team and architects.
  • Think strategically, creatively, and innovate ways to communicate and visualize user experiences.  
  • Implements or recommends technical solutions to common quality and design challenges, with guidance from others (including logic design, verification, circuit design, physical design, and design for test).
  • Uses standard practices to write complete design verification test cases, test benches, or automation.
  • Assists in writing tests for formal pre-silicon verification of subsystems within a single block; includes the use of simulation and emulation tools, as well as tests for signal integrity, to prevent bugs/failures before production.
